Greetings, My wife and I just graduated CDL school and are set up for orientation on Jan 7th in Jackson, MS. So my question is what is the best plan in a truck for you electronics? We both enjoy Netflix and skype stuff like that. Is there some insight out there on the best ways to set it up and equipment to get?
What to get for Christmas?

Well, I know Skype is from the internet, so if you have your computer with you, you're good to go. I would however, suggest you hold off on getting these electronics, because you want to make sure trucking will be a good fit for you and Wifey. Too many people head to orientation all gung ho and get a rude awakening and bail.

I suggest computer things that will make life better on the road. A good mobile wifi, Streets Trips w/gps, a logbook program, etc. The wifi can be used with Google earth to help you find a shipper/reciever. Streets can do a ton of trip planning. The logbook program can help keep DOT off yer back. Smart phones are also very helpful with the right apps. Remember that none of that stuff replaces the brain. Any tools are only as good as the brains that guide them...

First off I would have to say that satellite radio is a necessity! Television wise its going to be different for you guys because you are a team. You will either need a really good cell phone plan or satellite that is mobile like the ones on the big tour buses (they have them for big rigs too, looks like a dome on the top of the roof). Reason being because as a team, especially a husband/wife team you will rarely be sitting still. If you do find yourself sitting still, put in your resignation and go elsewhere! I did the whole husband/wife team thing and would highly recommend you go with a company large enough to keep you busy yet small enough to still treat you like a human being. Also look into other options besides hauling regular freight. There are many unique, high paying gigs in the industry that cater to husband/wife teams. Just for example, my wife and I hauled horses commercially. We were paid salary and made substantially more money than hauling regular freight! STAY AWAY FROM THE MEGA-CARRIERS!!! This will insure your success!
Sorry, back to topic at hand....
Personally I would advise that you wait until you are issued a truck. All trucks are set up different and certain products will be a better fit for certain trucks.
With that being said, when the time comes you really want to avoid buying your stuff at the truck stops. Prices will be twice as high! Walmart, Best Buy, Radio Shack, the internet etc.. are all much better places to spend your money. R.V. stores can be a little expensive but you can also find some unique stuff there.
So wait until you are issued a truck, get yourself a measuring tape and then go nutz!
Good luck...bigmac60 Thanks this.
