Just a heads up to any of the noobies who are headed to Swift via the Fontana terminal: If you have the option to go to Lathrop instead, do it! The Fontana terminal is admitted by the company to be the largest and least organized terminal Swift has. The average wait time for a trainer is supposed to be 1-2 days, BUT I'VE been sitting here for a week at my own expense. No calls, no emails nothing. I can't get a hold of anybody and every time I try to call I'm placed on hold indefinitely. The student coordinator has not responded to any of my e-mails, voice mail messages etc. Its getting so ridiculous I'm considering employment elsewhere. Meanwhile a friend of mine went through Lathrop and got in contact with a trainer less than three days later. If anybody has any helpful advice on who I can actually get in touch with to get this straightened out, i'd appreciate it. I'd really hate to just up and leave after putting a week in to orientation but I cant afford to just sit around waiting for a phone call either...
Fontana terminal is BS!

Contact Watkins & Shepard; have a terminal in Las Vegas.
Interstate Distributor has a terminal in Fontana & is looking for drivers that live in Las Vegas, according to the website. -
ive never driven for swift, but i must say that for every decent review ive heard from a current or past swift driver ive heard at LEAST 30 negative reviews. so sorry that youve gone through such a ridiculous ordeal. i wouldve been calling other companies after 3 days with no response whatsoever. if you arent ready for that yet, id call corporate at Tel: 602-269-9700. find out who to speak with about a complaint, and file one. of course, this may do nothing but alienate you from the company days after beginning a job there, but its better than sitting around waiting for the idiot in charge at fontana to decide you are worth their time. hope your experience with them improves...really crappy time of year to be sitting around in a foreign land and not getting paid to boot. good luck. if you are looking for other places to call, id throw crete, conway truckload, and usa truck into the mix. also heartland express, assuming they hire newbies (ive no idea bout that)

Sorry you're having a bad experience, but it happens.
Especially this time of year.
I was out of Fontana as well, and I waited a week or so for a trainer.
Well, I had my first one assigned after a couple days. But he was put on safety hold for some reason, so I had to wait for another.
I also started in December, which is not the best time for freight.
There is less freight this time of year, and there are a limited number of mentors.
Matching everyone up can be difficult for everyone.
And Fontana is hardly the largest and/or least organized terminal Swift has.
It is pretty small, as terminals go.
Try out somewhere like Laredo - you'll see that Fontana is not the least organized.
Fontana/Mira Loma are in one of the busiest areas of the country.
Give some slack, and have some patience.
You'll get on the road, and then you will have a whole new experience to complain about.fr8monkey and God Bless America Thank this. -
Today will be my last day of orientation. 3 0f 3. They told me it shouldn't take more than 2 days to get matched up with a mentor. I'm also in Fontana. Either way, you're getting paid to wait right? Hang in there, it's hurry up and wait remember...

A lot of mentors are not taking students for the holidays. I'd wait till at least after chritmas, you should have better luck by then. Try calling headquarters in phoenix, and speaking with the director of driver services.

My Swift driver and all the other's I talk to are going home... not looking for frieght or trainee's, and Swift is having a hard time getting everyone where they want to go. This and their own plans are probably taking up their time, remember they are people. This get's harder when as a a Mentor you have to provide housing when on Hometime. Not everybody has a guestroom with a private bathroom at the ready so paying for your hotel room over the holiday is just another expense, esp when they are making $0 sitting at home. I say head home or make plans for yourself if you can. I don't know who you would have to talk to about that though. Although frieght slows down after the holidays most guys want to be out there running so it will be back to business. I don't know if a bigger terminal would get you more success and finding a mentor doesn't mean they will accept you or you will want them. I envy you though My man should be at Fontana this afternoon... Saturday seems to long to wait to see him.

If a couple of days of sitting going to break your bank, maybe you should look at a different career path.

I disagree. Its been more than a couple of days and I don't have any problem sitting if I know whats going on. Unfortunately, when its no call back, no e-mail back after several days then you have to start to wonder whats really going on. Had I even gotten a single phone call from anybody letting me know what was going on i'd be content. And I've been doing this on and off, mostly at the local level, for two years so I doubt I'll be exploring a different career path anytime soon...

I'm not aware of getting paid? As far as I know were just sitting right? And they told me turn around would be one-two days for a mentor too. Don't buy it...
I started my OTR career with CRST around the same time a year or two ago. Say what you will about them, and boy do they suck, but they had two trainers ready for me within three to four days...
