Last week I came into Springfield and took my CDL test. I was a lucky one that drew a full truck pre-trip, managed to only miss two things on that (and they were questionable). Unfortunately I got a little nervous on my backing and didn't pass the first day. On the second day I drew the alley dock, with a state trooper looking on I managed to do all three maneuvers with 0 points. Then came the road test which I passed with a fairly decent score, remember to check all the signs! I must say I felt like a banty rooster strutting around after I went to the dmv, what a day!
My instructor needed to get home by Sunday, he is taking off till the first of the year for the holidays, so we teamed out to SLC so he could make it on time. Then I hitched a ride back to Illinois with another Prime driver. I sit here now glad to be home, but itching to get back on the road to finish my TNT phase. I really want to get my training done and get my own truck.
My instructor for PSD was awesome, he really was patient with me when I could not get the backing down at first. He kept me out for over 200hrs instead of the mandatory 75hrs before coming in to test. At first I was a little upset by how long it was taking to get back, but after getting to Sprimo and out on the pad I was glad I had the extra time behind the wheel. Oh and I might as well mention that he made Contractor of the Month for the month I was on his truck!
I must say that overall my experience with Prime has been great so far. While some of the people at the Campus Inn during orientation can be grating I realize that they are like that to help weed out the ones who can't make it. For anyone coming in for orientation at Prime my advice is to just hang in there, it may seem like a lot to digest but you can get through it. As for any specific advice just read the docked thread here.

When did you get your cdl through them??? I talked with a recruiter in sept . 2012 and was told they want an actual license, no permit before working with them.

We have a student driver program - PSD, I believe you must be 21-years-old to get into it. You spend 100 hours with an instructor in a real trucking environment picking up and delivering freight (more if necessary,) come back to Prime for backing practice, and test out with a Missouri DOT inspector. You end up with a MO CDL that can be transfered back to your home state. We suggest that folks get a CDL permit before coming since that takes a lot of the stress out of the first week. That credits you with 10,000 miles towards 40,000 miles (more if you need the work) necessary to be solo qualified here. After that, if you drive for a year with Prime, your CDL instruction is free.
