tuesday of this week had a relay go out that made me lose dash lights, turn signal lights and right side trailer lights. replaced relay all was good until tonite. same relay starting buzzing and same lights went out. thought trailer was shorting truck maybe so started there, unhooked pigtail and pulled relay and shut off lights to let relay cool off. put relay back in and all truck lights are on. 10 minutes later lose dash lights and turn signal lights again, new relay is buzzing and hot.
if whatever is going out when the relay starts f#$%ing up should be where the short is located....correct?
seems common sense to me, thought id get some feedback before i start in tomorrow, all shops are closed to wednesday and i've done enough wiring with other stuff that it shouldn't be a big deal.
need imput on this electrical short issue

Which circuit is the relay for? I would start there, could be at bad earth as more than one circuit is affected
-
I would check the alternator first and make sure it's putting out the correct voltage. I had one go bad on my car and it burned the low beam headlights out and dash lights. Also use a multimeter and check out the voltage going into the relay box and coming out of the relay box. An alternator going out will do some crazy things to your electrical system.

Look for something smoking hot, that's where your short will be. Look at all lights ans wiring to the lights.

Also further isolation would be a good idea. Turn off dash lights, try again, etc. Could also be your dash light knob itself. See how hot it gets.

thanks for tips so far
think ill replace the light switches as other ones that get used all the time ie jake and cruise have gone bad in the last couple months,
have noticed a bit of flickering in one of the switch lights that did go out and back on, so maybe thats is what could be shorting, no smoke or hot smell tho, relay stopped buzzing when i turned my light switch off -
Try checking for shorts near the turn signal wires under the hood. My truck would occasionally trip off the breaker for the turn signal if I tried using the right hand directional. I was able to find the short at night due to the fact that the cab interior lights would dim while signaling until the breaker popped.
Found out whoever had the truck before us tied the wires going to the right side headlight/turn section to the air intake pipe going from the turbo to the intercooler, melting one wire enough through the insulation and causing a ground short. Peeled off the wires, taped it up with electrical + duct tape, and zip tied it to the bumper's support bar. -
got er, bad switch.

Sort of, you first disconnect the ground cable and connect a test light or amp meter between the cable and terminal, if there is a current draw you will see it on the meter or light.
