My shifter suddenly has no resistance moving side to side. I assume the spring in the top (shifter housing) of the trans broke. It doesn't "spring back" to the center position like normal. (13 speed RTLO16913A). It's not a major issue while driving, but I would like to get it fixed.
1. Where would be a good place to get this fixed?
2. Can I replace the spring myself easily through the floor opening?
3. Could something other than that spring breaking cause this?

how many miles on it ? a new shift tower is not very expensive. just a thought

Springs are an easy fix. Take the boot off from in the cab and they are right there. You may get lucky and just had one pop off. Unfortunately its probably more than likely broke. However, if thats your problem it's an inexpensive fix. I had this problem once and a spring corrected the problem. The dealer told me if the spring was not the problem it could be a synchronizer, not sure on how true that is though.

Thanks. What I'm worried about is having to work on it one-handed through the little floorboard hole. Especially with the shifter assembly itself about a foot below the floorboard.

The spring in the shift tower is just for slop in the tower itself. It has nothing to do with the spring plunger for the side to side resistance when selecting reverse or low. This spring loaded plunger is on the shift fork inside the transmission. The whole shift bar housing has to come out, which may mean the whole transmission if there is a clearance issue. Not something for a DIY'er. The plunger may be stuck or broken spring. Either way, you can still drive it.

Yes, after a little research (illustrated parts list and service manual), I know the spring and plunger you're talking about, in the low/reverse shift yoke.
You know a good shop to get it fixed, anywhere in the midwest, south, or northeast? Can a KW dealer fix this competently?

you can drop a new shift tower on it and fix it yourself....quick easy job...you could also put a backwards top plate on instead of the factory one. this is nice because high gear is on the dash instead of between the seats...

A shifting tower will NOT solve your problem. As stated earlier, your problem is in your top plate, and may require transmission removal to repair depending on clearance issues. Any competent shop can perform this repair for you.

I'd never get used to that.
Besides, I like having the shifter where I can rest my hand on it in top gear. Might be an advantage in a team truck, though.
But as was pointed out by Heavyd, the spring in question is the one mounted in the low/reverse shift yoke, not the spring in the tower.
I've pretty much decided not to do it myself, so now I'm just trying to figure out a good place to have it done.
