If I inform them of the situation, and they approve the re-route, it's based that way off practical miles. We don't go west of Denver on 70, so most of the stuff is already factored in. If I have to re-route, I get it approved and keep track of the mileage, but it's basically Practical mileage, so the difference isn't great enough for me to fuss over. The option is to run into the bad stuff and stop which isn't kosher to me either. If it's avoidable, I do it....and so far with this company, it's worked out right for me, since they seem to take approaching weather patterns into account when dispatching me. Also, when dispatched, I make a note of the route, and check the weather and keep them updated...like when that stuff hit in 2011. I was driving on snow in SC (they aren't used to it but I am), stopped in LA over ice, and drove around Alexandria,LA when it was closed because of snow that the locals couldn't operate on, etc. They didn't require me to drive if I felt it was bad, and that's my call. However, chaining is their call and they will not allow it. Which is why I say my chains are for show and tell.![]()
Company says no chains?!?

well, i'm heading out to start my work week what's left of the week.
and i've got my chains all waxed and shined, ready to be used. i plan on being home for the extended weekend. not sitting around waiting for the chain law to lift. -
Just call your car loan company...they'll understand
-
You got this right. There are drivers that live in Reno that do Bay area turns that would never be home if they didn't.

I got chains on my truck down here in Alabama.... And I have used them a few times over the years in snow... Last time was 3 years ago in Pennsylvania getting back out of Scranton...
Pulled into a rest area and trooper was there and looking at my truck. Told me there were 5 trucks jackknifed on the hill blocking most of it and said if I wanted to go, then I needed chains to get around for safety... I laughed and told him I had them (and showed him) and sat for 3 hours while it was straightened out...
(I did offer to drop the wreck I had and go clean the road, but he turned me down..)NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
Not statewide though:
"California does not require truckers to carry chains during certain times of the year. However, when trucks enter a posted "chains required" area, they must be carrying chains. And when chain law is in effect, truckers cannot proceed without chains on their tires. Cal-Trans will set up "truck screening" areas when chains are required to make sure that truckers are carrying the minimum required chains, so that if they need to use chains, they will be able to install them."
Only in posted chain areas, not the entire state like in Colorado.
Would be a tough argument that you would need to.carry chains while in the Imperial Valley, lol. -
Word of Caution
on that coops r open site.
Most of it is OLD information,
check for updated rules/regs........ -
I checked the Caltrans website and it says the same thing. Can't say about Arizona but as far as I know, the only regulation regarding tire chains in NM is that they are "allowed".
