Back in 1990 I made .18cpm and drove a single screw cabover, it wasn't as bad as it sounds because back then a dollar went alot farther than today. The trucks back then weren't anything like these today, the only a/c was my dash fan and both windows down, and air ride yeah right but it was all good and alot of great memories.
Starting pay what did you make your first driving?

D*M! buck a truck! Brings back memories. I actually took the Greyhound to Ft. Scott in 1980. During the first day of orientation, they said I wasn't the right kind of driver because I kept asking too many questions. In retrospect, it's one of the best things that ever happened when I took the bus back out of town.lil fred Thanks this. -
.27 mile with builders transport 1991 cabover . Back in those days a heavy set trucker was very very rare. Cuz you had to climb in and out of a truck

O.k., So my first job was for Empire Kosher Poultry in 1977, driving out of their Bird In Hand, Pa. ( Yes, that's the name of the town) facility. I ran to New York city 5 nights a week with fresh chicken, usuallu 4-6 stops per trip, for the whopping salary of $42.50 per trip. I never drove a truck before, having gotten my class 3 Pa. license earlier in the year when they began classifying licenses. With my renewal form, there was a card where they told us to check the box for what license best matched what we did. I thought, "What the heck", and I checked class 3, which was for trucks over 27,000 lb. gross. I was sure they would question is, but when I got it, wow, class 3!
So, I applied for Empire, and they had the mechanic take me for a test drive with their 1971 international 4070 bobtail. I ground every gear, telling him I wasn't used to that transmission. He said no problem, they hired me, and sent me to Hunts Point Market that night for my first stop. Oh boy, I was a trucker like Sonny Pruitt!!
It took almost an hour to back into my first dock at Hunt's Point, even though there was nobody near me at the time.
But, 35 years and a couple loading docks later, I can do it right now LOL.The Challenger, lil fred, 58Skylane and 1 other person Thank this. -
the question from todays professional drivers would be "who is Sonny Pruitt"
