Even though I was not the original poster thanks for the replies.

i was going to order a new trailer to run western canada today but i wanted to get some quotes and check into adding a 3rd axle to one of my existing spreads. I am sure the number the trailer shop is going to come back with is close to 10k for a lift installed (not sure how you can do it for 2500) but i figure that is better than spending 42K (53 foot Benson) or 46K (48 foot reitenouer) with sliding axles.

Be careful (if you run Ontario) about a lift axle. Enforcement is divided as to whether they are legal or not. Some will allow ir IF the switch is located outside the cab while others won't allow it at all.

I believe it is 9100 kg, which is 20020 lbs, for the total weight of both axles on a 10'1" spread.

[h=4]Maximum gross weight for axles[/h]7.16 (1) A person must not, without an overload permit, drive or operate on a highway a vehicle loaded or configured so that
    (a) the gross weight on an axle exceeds the manufacturer's rated capacity for that axle or for the brake or suspension system with which the axle is equipped,
    (b) the gross weight on an axle exceeds 9 100 kg,
    (c) the gross weight on any one axle of a tridem or tandem axle group exceeds 9 100 kg,

    Yep, you're right
