This last year several of the Owner Operators under my authority have been doing regular analysis of their operation. What I have seen is that they tend to be able to spot trends, both good and bad, in their business and take action. Trends they may never have spotted had they not been journaling their business.

In my old business world we called this S.W.O.T. Analysis. Strength – Weakness – Opportunities – Threats.

In business, it was encouraged to do this on three levels: one for your personal life, one for yourself in business and one for your business unit.

Independent O/O’s can do this on a regular basis as a way of gaining some insight into your business. I am sure that you all are tracking your numbers by load, week, month, quarter and year. Included your numbers in you analysis, take a look at the loads and the areas that you ran and journal your thoughts. You will be surprised what you end up putting on paper.

You will also be surprised how this simple little action will help you come up with new ideas, solutions or see a problem that you didn’t realize existed.

And the best part is you have the resources of TTR when you find an issue that you need to address but no answers. Or you can share when you come up with something that could help people.

My first weekend in the truck, I bought and 18 month calendar book. Good for all of 2013.

Every day gets something written on what I am doing. Maintenance, loads, work etc. even when I mail my BOL into the office.

I intend to do a daily journal with notes as to why I chose that particular load that given day, how the negotiations went,if anything went south (load cancel etc) how that got dealt with. Very difficult to remember these details. My grandfather did something similar with the farm operation. These details can be useful for reference or even study. I already keep very detailed records on odometer miles, loads, and rates. Can look at that info now and spot important trends to me.

I have question about time management. Let's say you deliver a load in Atlanta at 1:00 pm. Your waiting to be unloaded. While you wait a broker calls up and says he has a good paying load in Macon,Ga pickup time is 5:00pm. Do you go ahead and commit to the Macon,Ga load? Even though you haven't been unloaded yet. To me, time management would be one of the biggest hurdles for a new o/o. How would you handle that scenario?

I tell the broker the situation and we either adjust the pick up time or we don't.

Communication is CRITICAL as an O/O. In everything you do.

You book the load in advance if something happens which in which you are detained you then call the broker and tell them. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
