I know miles = money but it would be a shame to not stop on occasion to soak up some Americana. Can anyone tell me if it's a royal pain in the @*# to plan a reset or downtime near a tourist trap? What are most companies rules about diverting off route to go to an amusement park, national monument or park, or to visit family, etc.? I suspect rental cars may be a remedy. Is it safe to leave rig at truck stops for a night or two unattended? If not where have you parked them for a brief getaway when not near a company terminal?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    It's a job.
When you get your off time is when you go on vacation , not while working .

You can sight-see through the windshield.

If you can't see it from the interstate, you wont see it. If you have a load in the box you aren't allowed to leave the truck (beyond the reasonable necessities), if you don't you are on call for the next load.

yes stay in the truck and keep the door closed. if you want to sight see take vacation. strange things happen to your truck and trailer if you leave it at the truck stop, while you are out being a looky loo. the more you fool around on the road, you will spend more money. what do you think your safety director is going to ask you if the truck is damaged or your trailer is broken into. you are responsible for the equipment. trucking is not a easy thing to do, and you should spend your time trying to do that to the best of your ability.

as much as work is work, you can pick a place that is above others to take your 34, if you are unlucky and have to take one on the road, me, I always made it a point to make it home, except for once, I went to Mount Rushmore, there is truck parking at the TS where you can drop your trailer and the park charges you the RV fee for parking with your power unit

If your company it is hard to just stop and run around when under a load, and on a 34 reset you might can a little if you have relatives to pick you up or get a taxi, etc. It is even hard to get in to go to the store and buy groceries most generally; Walmart is your best place for drugs and groceries if they allow parking. Also keep curtains closed when stopped like that so people don't know if the truck is manned or not.

We have enjoyed time off in the oasis in OH, rest areas in most states which allowed 24hr parking, loved the Lake Junaluska rest areas in NC. Welcome centers in VT. And then window sightseeing out of the truck in remote, desolate areas, small Amish towns, etc. Adventure is what you make it and in the truck it is cheaper by far traveling.
