Thanks double yellow. Was only taught to look for the 90 degrees with the brakes on. Will now be looking for the less than 2" travel when trailer brakes are released.

Yes if your brakes are out of adjustment you have to throw them away and hope the new ones are pre adjusted. lol

not a good idea to go cranking on slack adjusters with ratchet and small breaker bar.

All of these comments are true. You're not supposed to adjust self-adjusting slacks but that doesnt mean that they never go out of adjustment. Usually I have found that if they are installed CORRECTLY - they will maintain correct slack.

Periodically I will also come to a stop and stand on the brakes several times applying full PSI....

So far, during each DOT inspection my slacks have kept things proper....but don't put your life on it-

have been told over the yrs by US and Canadian DOT guys that if got under there and adjusted the brakes without being a certified mechanic, they would put me out of service until one did get there to fix them.

don't care if the company showed me how and gave me a little card. It does not make you a certified brake mechanic.

if you have a wreck and you were the last one to touch them, you are liable.

According to the website prior experience of at least one year working on commercial air brake systems is all that needs to be kept on file for that mechanic while they work there and one year later.

There isnt a universal license to be a mechanic, if there was it wouldnt mean anything anyways. Millions of people with drivers licenses shouldnt be on the road, just because they passed the test doesnt make them qualified.

I think a lot of people miss the point that you arent going to be adjusting your brakes in front of a DOT officer. Youll be keeping them in good operating condition on your off time so there is never a question. They probably arent going to be asking for credentials and proof of who adjusted your brakes if everything checks out okay.

That being said. Once you start messing with them you assume the responsibility.
