    Hey all,
Due to a hick-up with a VA rep my school is now starting in March instead of Feb. I was wondering if I should start applying to companies that interest me or wait until I am in class?

I like to think ahead so I'm wondering if it's feasible. Thanks all.

    Hey Sillen,

I started school on Jan. 7th. I started applying with companies sometime before Christmas. I was like you and wanted to get a jumpstart on things. I would advise you to do the same also. Goodluck!

Personally I would avoid the prehires. I would also avoid filling out the apps that go to multiple companies. Stay away from the mega-carriers! Your best chances of success are going to be with the smaller companies. Sure its harder work but will be worth it.

Chompi is right. As a soon to be student myself I was under the impression that only the "mega carriers" hire newbies, however upon further investigation I found that not to be true. After spending some time looking up smaller (ma and pa) companies, and making a few phone calls, I found a few companies that said they would hire a student right out of school. One of them admitted that they don't advertise that, and their site even says "At least 1 years experience" but if you have a clean record both background and driving they would take me on and train me. Sometimes it just takes a phone call. Just called another company this morning, father started the company and his two sons help him run it. I got on the phone with one of the sons (VP and recruiter for the company) and explained to him that I was a soon to be student and that I was motivated, reliable, and ready to work hard. He said to follow up with him after my CDL is in hand and he will most likely have a spot for me. Granted there is no guarantee, but he sounded very sincere and we even joked about how the new guys often times get sucked up by the mega carriers without even making a single call. Anyway, look up some local companies and make a call or two, you never know!

All that being said however, I for one am still planning on putting applications to as many companies as I can. (even the big ones) It can't hurt to be a little pro active, and more options are always better the fewer.
