Ok I have a question for those of you who are up to speed on cb radios. I have been running a Cobra 29 ltd classic for the last 14 years. It is keed to 1/2 watt, has a mod kit, 250 wat amp, rk 56, 18 ft coax and wilson 2000. Radio still works fine but I want to be able to run a solid radio with out the amp so I am wanting to hear what you might think would be the best radio/set up for that. Thanks for the come back!

    What do you mean by:

    ?

Are you referring to something like a Galaxy 98VHP or a Connex 4300-300 that have the built in amp?

Turbo-T it does need to have a built in amp per-say, if it did and it was a good radio that is great if not then that is ok to. Just want to try out a radio that has power and is reliable with out having to have something to push it. I mean if what I am using is my best bet I will stay with what I have I have been looking at other options already just wanted to see what other cb user had to say about what they felt like good radios were and if there may be a better option for me. I just know my radio is getting older and if I upgrade I want to look at having an all in one package verse having a radio and amp set up. How that helps clear up what I'm looking for.
Trucker 79010 I will check them out thanks!

I like it to I just know my radio is 14 years old and if I have to upgrade I would like to think about getting away from using an amp and having an all in one set up.

I had a Cobra 50th anniversary radio. I had it tweaked and tune and had echo put on it had that $30 cheap coil antenna(literally the best antenna I've ever had beats Wilson and K40) from Loves and man I could talk 7-9 miles easy with that radio set up like that.

The "all in one" radios with the amps built in (like a Galaxy 98VHP or Connex 4300-300) are ok, however for what you are getting (200-300 watts, depending on what radio you get), you could buy a run-of-the-mill Cobra 29, with an amp capable of pushing the same amount, if not more power, for less than you'd pay for something like the 98VHP or the 4300-300.

Now, where radios such as the 4300-300 or the 98VHP really shine, are if you drive a company truck and you are not allowed to run an amp...and there's no stipulation that you can't run the power wires direct to the battery (because on either of these radios, it's crucial that you do this as they draw so much power, they'll melt the trucks internal wiring)........or if you just want to clean up the truck (not have an amp just sitting around) and don't mind the extra expense. But again for what you're getting, you could get an nice amp and a decent radio for less.

There's also radios that have what's called an RFX-75 which is not an amp but a final upgrade in the form of a heat sink on the rear of the radio with the transistors inside.......the RFX'd radios are not as potent as either of the radios I mentioned, but some of the magnums come with them, and they can be added to a Cobra 25/29 for an "all in one" radio with a little more power than stock....the RFX-75 is good for maybe 80-100 watts of power.

The Connex 4300-300 is getting hard to find. The Galaxy DX98VHP pushes 200 watts no problem but expect to drop about 500 bucks on one after the channel conversion is done and it is setup.
Several radios in the 100+ watt range though. Connex 4600 Turbo,Galaxy 94HP some of the Magnums and Ranger radios.

Thanks every one this is all great info. I am getting ready to have my radio man go.through my 29 just to make sure every thing is up.to.snuff I have not had any problems with my set up and it works great. Actually my 250 watt amp has always done a great job. I have not had to worrie about a change in so long I just feel out of the loop on info and I don't know how long my 29 will last so I thought I better start looking at my options. It sounds about like it did 14 years ago I need to just keep what I got!
