Has anyone used a GoPro for recording?? I would hate to have to try to come up with evidence without video! -
-
My dash cam finally captured something, my truck getting hit by another driver parking! I have to figure out how to download it when I get home.

Be sure you save the info on the memory card when you copy the info to your puter.
Do not delete the orginal!
Windows media player should work.
DO NOT POST THE VIDEO . That may screw up your insurance claim.
(maybe after your claim would be ok, not sure)
Good luck
mary
get a other memory card for next trip.
You want to keep this one just like it is for now.
slide the little button to lock if it has one
copy info, then put card into sealed envelope date and sign itlLast edited: Jan 19, 2013
Dieselboss and JackTheWhack Thank this. -
Yes you are right that generally all dash cameras in the markets are work poor in low light surrounding, the IR LEDs are not powerful enough to perform perfectly as in the day, so I am using one without night vision function, here it is http://www.szswill.com/car-camera-hd/car-dash-camera-d310.html a very cute one, I love it so much.

Wow. You guys have said a mouthful. First off, by the Supreme Court of the good ole USA, its perfectly legal to film in every state of the union. Second, even if it wasn't, you have the added protection of filming in and around your place of business, which a truck is. If it was maryland or illinois, my first question to the courts would be if they force a 7-11 to turn of all their surveillance vids when the cops are there for any reason? Answer, NO. I currently have a dash cam pointed forward, and its on any time the truck is running. I'll change that soon, to a 24/7 hookup. Also, I'm going to get a card that is small, like for about 20 min or so in HD. They don't need to see my whole day, that would be an invasion of my privacy. Yes the sound is on, always will be. As far as labels, it is on the side of the truck, small letters, so if Officer Pushy didn't catch it, his prob, not mine. I'll be getting another later with an even smaller time window to point inside at the driver, me. That way it covers my rear when some dolt says I wasn't paying attention. Ultimately, I want a full 360 degree system to cover the entire outside of the vehicle. The only thing you would miss is the car that is 3 ft off the bumper, which shouldn't be there, anyway. The system itself would have 2 buttons, not a single one like the LEOs have, but with a few extras. Like an orange button that would go back 5 min and record to a separate flash drive of a few terabytes. It would also be transmitted to the company, and an undisclosed location and continue real time until pressed again. The BIG red button would go back 15 min, and do the same, but could only be shut off by the safety personnel back at the main terminal. It would give an alert to the safety monitor. They could watch and listen, but not talk, and monitor the situation. Also transmitting to that same undisclosed location. Lets see this guy try to cross 7 state lines to try and get his destructive little paws on THIS bit of evidence! I've personally had LEOs delete evidence off of their dashcams and lie through their teeth on the reports that follow. NEVER AGAIN!!!
Scenario: Bad cop pulls you over because he feels like it, you push Mr. Red when you see the berries and cherries. He finds that the truck is recording, demands you shut it down. Well, he just implicated himself that he wants no witnesses for what he intends to do next. Let your imagination go where it will, but a good cop won't even be annoyed.
Before anyone goes of on my beef with cops, don't. I come from a cop family, my stepfather was the worst. I have also had extremely good relations with a lot of good ones, I even know where some live, as they have invited me over for cookouts and such, and I've even made social calls unannounced, and visit for a bit. So I'm definitely not a cop hater.
As far as wiretapping laws go, I don't think the right question has been asked yet. Was the device hooked up to a phone or information line? No. Was the device set to pick up electronic transmissions, voice or data? No. Was the device concealed? No. Was the cop vocalizing state or government sensitive data? No. But you guys use these against citizens to convict them for what they say when you can, right? Well, yes. What is good for the goose is good for the gander, I say.
Every person has a verbal abuse threshold, and cops love taking advantage of that bit of human nature, just so they can get away with their dirty deeds. I won't let it happen again.
Likewise, I've had the idiots come off the ramp when there was traffic on my left, and give me the finger and slam on the brakes. This was before the dash cams became so cheap. If it happens now, there will be hell to pay for the perp.
Decide what you will when it comes to these neat little gadgets, personally, I like mine. Don't forget to supplement it with a good handheld video camera. Just the sound off of one of these things kept one of my students out of some seriously hot water. -

Good gawd, guys, don't get your panties in a wad. Use a dash cam that loops short segments of video, 5-10 minutes, keep a modest sized card in the cam.
This means when the card starts to fill up, it deletes the oldest file automatically on the card.
Make sure your time and date stamp is accurate, not really for legal purposes, but it makes it easier for you to find the file if you happened to look at the time the event happened you want to see the video of, and save it to your laptop.
You'll only have 30 minutes or so the last video segments recorded at any time. If something happens I want to make sure I keep the video of, I just unplug the cam and it turns off, if I can't stop right away and download the file.
Mine is on whenever the truck is on, or the key in the accessory position. maybe it will catch the truck backing into me some night, as long as I wake up?. (Been backed into a few times to peek out to see the tail end of a trailer heading out into the distance.)
I was thinking about putting a larger card in that will give me a few hours of video, to cover the times I'm in a truckstop, showering, eating, etc. (came back to find a damaged truck with no witnesses a few times, too)
The video is primarily for YOUR USE. Don't scream at somebody you have had an accident with that 'I got you on video' or offer the info initially to the cops. (if it's your fault)
If you are worried about having incriminating info on the card, then you are either driving very badly, or not so smart. The function of a proper dashcam that continuously re-records over the card may save your butt. If you want to save a file, you'll have to copy it from the dashcam. (I usually just plug in the USB cable and download the file I want, the others will be taped over eventually)
Somebody mentioned being able to read license plate numbers of car on the video? Not real likely, most of the lenses are wide angle, and even on my better camera, I can't make out the tag numbers, but you'll have enough detail of the specific vehicle if something happens.
I have my other cameras in the truck for special purposes. My dashcam works automatically, unattended. As long as I keep my windshield clean, it works fine....and the occasional bug spat in the video reminds me to clean my windshield.
