I have been reading this board with interest every night while I was in school. I didn't have the nerve to say anything before in case I didn't pass the CDL test, but alas I have my shiny new, well paper since Missouri just changed how they issue drivers licenses. I am going to Swift Orientation in Edwardsville, KS. I plan on driving since I am coming from St.Louis and greyhound wants me to leave at 945 Saturday night and get in at 725 sunday morning. But The real question I have is do the mentors understand the whole CDL school only teaching to pass the test? I am beyond green behind the ears, I have a pretty good learning curve but other then knowing the basics required for the CDL test I don't have any clue what I'm doing!

Most Mentors will already know the deal.
Just make sure you get a good one. Lots of bad ones out there.

Ya the mentors know hope u get a good 1 I had a great 1 from there that's my term too Im also from STL, you would think its a easy place to get home or go pass through but it's not always easy to get home. We do have a drop yard in East STL IL to do tcalls home if u can get planner change it to a tcall, Frank at term is cool guy he gives the road test after being with mentor, I couldn't back great and he still passed me to go solo, soak all that knowledge mentor gives u, u will need it.

you may think this is a easy paycheck wrong its stressful, and u work a lot for Free u only get paid to drive nothing more the pay starts small but moves up quick within 1 yr u will be at $.32 and if u run East it's $.34 and u could always run for Walmart like I do and make more I get miles plus stops but west pays less

    good luck and be safe

Nope, the changed the law very quietly on Jan 1. During the transition some offices still do plastic until they get the new equipment. I got to be one of the first to drive on the paper licenses. They had to give me a leaflet incase I have to use it for Id since not a lot of people know about it.

Oh I have no delusions about it being an easy paycheck, I have always been one to want to work for my money and from what I have learned about the trucking industry the harder your work the more you can make. We have also prepared to spend the first year learning the ropes before I even look at my paycheck for more then paying bills.

The first few months won't be bad prove your self and within 2 months you can be making good money I run my 14 then I set my PTA in 10hrs and I have made great money I made $43,000 my 1st year not bad I was happy with that the key is u have to stay out 24 days to take 4 days off or that's how I have always did it and did good, if u constilately going home ever 12 days its hard to make money I talk to drivers making $300 and I'm confused I have never made less than $600 a week even my 1st few months I've been at Swift 15 months I have made $600 to $1500 a week I pretty much average now $900 to $1200 unless I take Hometime pay depends a lot on delivery times don't let them make u sit on a load that delivers in 2 days after arriving at dest. that screws u tell them to tcall it ur DM can do it if u ask.

if u got family wife kids its a long hard time away for weeks at a time but if u can make it a year u can get local, or pm me and I can tell u how to go local after u go solo but the pay isn't great but its decent and its with Swift.

I do have a family and we are ready for being gone for as long as a month at a time.We figure we would rather stay out longer and then stay home longer. 30 days get you 5 off! I'm ready to prove to myself once I learn as much as I can from my mentor. Recently I tend to be hearing more good things about swift then bad, everyone doing good told me to have patience and just do my job. We had two current employees stop by while I was in school the first one was p&m about how he wasn't making any money, had only been solo two weeks. The next guy had 8 months in and said they money is there you must have to earn it. No free lunches in trucking!

I did my Orientation at Edwardsville just before Christmas. Kevin is an absolute riot in class, Frank works with you on the road test. My roommate came from CR England and had no idea how to double-shift and Frank worked with her on our road test until she got it. I can't say anything about mentors because I've driven for almost three years and am on the truck with my fiance.

I have the basics I could pass the road test no problem, I'm just worried about what the differences in when i pulling a load, I still need work both up shifting and down shifting just to prefect it, I can do it but its not always the prettiest thing! but from what I hear since I just graduated I wont even do a road test until I get done with my mentor? but again not a deal I passed the state with very little issues so not to worried if I do!

Thanks everyone for all the replies! I feel like I am getting a head start!
