...when the Jeep is running. With the Jeep off it sits at 3, but when I start it and its running Im dead key at 7. I dont know if its normal or not, but I worry its affecting the performance and may be bad for the radio.

Its a 3 pin 3 wire to the cig lighter (please dont preach about using the battery unless you want to come hook it up for me!).

BTW, my failure to modulate WAS the pot...it was cranked full closed. Turned it up to about 75% and reported loud and clear!

    Thanks for any help fellas.

Leave it as is if you don't want anyone to preach about hooking it up to the battery.. It is what it is if you run it off the cig lighter. It is not going to hurt anything it just is not going to get any better. For a radio to perform like it supposed to you have to supply it with the right power supply, read the manual if all else fails

Its not that I wouldnt like to have it hooked to the battery, its that I am not comfortable doing electrical work.

Thanks for being so understanding and helpful...

What kind of radio is it maybe you can hook it to a better power supply than the cig lighter, I would never hook my radio up to a cig lighter specially radios now days you need the correct power supply for them to perform as they are designed to do.. Just saying. If it is a big radio with a lot of watts you have no choice but to hook it directly to the battery or you will burn things up including the radio.. Not smart, you work hard for your money I hate to see it go up in smoke and void the warranty too

A older 29 stock should be okay with a cig lighter, if it's really old maybe the radio is getting weak? Was in made in Philly? if so it would be worth taking to a good CB shop and have them go through it and make sure everything is up to par and a good tune as those are some of the best radios ever made

Well, maybe not THAT old. It was manufactured in May of 01'.

Maybe I can find a car audio place that will wire it for me...

The reason the radio has more power when the engine is running is because it's getting higher voltage.

With the engine shut off (and a good battery), it's getting 12V. With the engine running, it should be getting closer to 14V.

Your radio is probably peaked to the higher (charging) voltage.

Well, drove home from work tonight and noticed the dead key is more like a 7 or 9 when driving. In park, running, a five, parked not running a 3.

Wonder if Im transmitting electrical disruptions?

Yes. Since all RF is electrical. But, as you have described it, I wouldn't worry about it unless someone says something.
