Hello, I'm an ex habitual pot smoker. Smoked all day every day for about 4 years.

I woke up with 2 kids one morning and realized I need to make money.

Been clean ever since. (45 days as of this post)

My problem, is the hair follicle test. I want to be 100% sure i'm clean before i take it for a company.

I'm not taking shortcuts, just waiting it out. Slowly counting the days before I go pay for a hair follicle test myself.

I've seen that the tests go back 90 days, 1 year, 2 years, and even 15 years. Or so says the reliable people on the internet.

There are so many different answers. Which is it? I'd rather not waste a possible career because I failed a drug test.

I know drug stores sell urine test kits so you can check yourself, not sure if hair follicle is available. Okay, so I Googled "home hair follicle drug test" and found Walmart has a hair test kit, for about $50 you can precheck yourself. http://www.walmart.com/ip/HairConfirm-Hair-Drug-Test-Kit/15126535 Lots of good info in the search results about hair follicle tests. Good Luck!
Do you realize that truck driving will probably keep you away from your family for weeks at a time? If your not prepared it can be very rough being away from home and family. I hope you will do some research before you jump into trucking.

I have worked for 6 different companies in the last 12 years, three Canadian, three US companies, I have never had hair follice test, only urine tests. Some random tests too.
Allniter is right, the reasonable income comes with price. Make sure you know, what you are geting in to.

Congrats on the 45 days BUT don't even think of driveing for a liveing till you KNOW you'll stay clean.
Do yourself a favor and wait at least a year or two.

BTW "I woke up with 2 kids one morning and realized I need to make money". Thats a bigger problem than a hair test.

Thank ya'll. I realize i'll be working a lot. I like driving and its what I've done for the past year and a half already. I drive a shuttle van inbetween cities. Most of my passengers are oilfield hands and truck drivers. I just cant support 2 kids with it. I think i have a good idea whats to come in this job. Only 1 way to find Out

No doudbt ill be clean forever.

I think it's safer just to wair until i can pass a follicle test rather then counting on them giving a urine test.

I don't know who does what kind of tests here and i dont want to call and ask. I feel like that would incriminate myself.

im taking my first test when the dmv opens this morning.

Been studying while I wait for my system to clean

You may want to totally postpone driving a truck for a living until your kids have both become adults, age 21, and have received their high school diplomas, along with any other advanced degrees and certificates. In the mean time, this will give you the opportunity to stay drug free for the remainder of your life, as well as concentrating on keeping your MVR clean, and make sure that you go out of your way to totally clean up both your credit and credit report. Equally important, stay out of trouble with the law. Be sure to get yourself into the best physical and health condition possible to both be healthier and meet DOT health and physical fitness standards.

In the mean time, you may need to either get a 2nd. part time job or look fro a better paying job. Does your wife work? If not, perhaps she could get a part-time job during the day. Try to stay with the same company up until you are ready to get into a truck driving job, at least a good 10 plus straight years. There are are trucking companies that want an uninterrupted 10 year plus working history. It is THEIR measure of one's stability in the work force.

Also, when you do get ready to become an OTR truck driver, be sure that your aging parents are healthy enough in which you do not have to be home to help take care of them. If one or both of your parents have passed away, I do express sincere condolences to you. The same would apply to aging parent-in-laws.

Before my mother passed away, I had gone back home to the east coast to help my 2 sisters care for her in 2006. I was living in the Midwest at the time. After my mother passed away about a year later, in 2007, I spent an additional 2 years helping my 2 sisters settle both of our deceased parents estate. In 2009 I moved back to the Midwest. I have never married and do not have any children.

In another few years, I will be able to go into OTR truck driving. I am in the process of getting both my MVR and credit report cleaned up, as well as acquiring a decent employment history to fulfill both DOT and many trucking company requirements. This year will be my 6th. continuous year of employment with my company. I am shooting for 10 plus years, providing that I do NOT get terminated or laid off.
I am also in the process of getting my health and body into much better shape and condition to both be healthier and and meet DOT health standards.

    GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!
