Pete...the difference is YOU KNOW HOW to drive a manual...and CHOOSE not to...

i have driven more than one truck that had an automatic, i personally HATED them...i do agree tho....just because someone drives an automatic doesnt make them lazy.....

thank goodness for the rookies...who else am i gonna ask stuff so i can learn??? duh....

    :biggrin_2559:

    agreed on both counts

i think EVERYONE should learn on a manual first....i agree with you

when Injun got banned and went to another site...07~379 and BW9 followed her.....

    dont tease me....:biggrin_25522:

ha ha...made me hear that line from "shrek" ....

:biggrin_2556:Well that would explain why I have been taping my hands...knuckles dragging on the floor all the time. And I have been eating bunches of bananas lately..And the other day at the zoo with the kids I thought Lucille the Orangutan was kinda cute...I wonder..Would that be considered "Inter-Species" dating?:biggrin_2556:

Not sure why "Shifting makes a Truck Driver a Truck Driver" Why not save energy and muscle use for something more then this? I prefer an Automatic but I may just be a "Steering Wheel Holder" But I can keep up with the 3 nickel quad boxes, and whatever they used to have, old timers and rest of the best in their collection of sticks coming out of the dog house on the COE!

As myself and a few others have said....shifting teaches the student the correct parameters in the SPEED/RPM/GEAR while operating a big rig. Once learned, the auto shift trannies, when used in the "manual" setting, offers less chance of doing something (or trying to do something) that can cause harm to the system.

I would compare it to learning the alphabet before learning to read.

Even floating you do more then driving a automatic at least your doing something instead of just holding the steering wheel when taking off and climbing and going down

I"ve read alot about how being able to shift gives you more control on driving the truck. Doesn't an automatic take driver error out of the equation and shift according to speed/rpms?

I'm asking if the automatic will put you in the right gear for , say, going up/down a grade or if they have been known to put the driver in a dangerous situation? Either way, will each and every driver choose the same gear if all conditions are the same? Load, transmission, speed limit, grade, weather conditions, road conditions and any of the other myriad of things that determine the proper gear? If not, then whose advice do you listen to?
