Well I decided to start a new Knight thread. If you work for Knight and enjoy it, post it! I have been with Knight for 3 years. I started as a OTR driver and have moved into a dedicated position. I did not intend to stay with the company this long as I want a position that would get me home every night to my family. My DM's and OM have worked me well and have listened to my needs and concerns. It has not been easy, but then again nothing ever is. Their pay is ok and I make enough to like comfortably. The benefits are ok also. Having better health will be more cost effective for you. Knight is not the best company, but it is also not the worst. Most drivers complain about miles. This company runs their business on short haul and medium haul trips. medium haul trips average from 300-600 miles. They do have longer runs but with competition, different forms of transportation (ie rail), they have become fewer. As for me and my dedicated account, it is on a hourly basis. No overtime sadly. No holiday either. I get home everyday and work nights. I enjoy it. It is easy work and have been on and off the account for some time. I am the sole local delivery driver for the account now. All in all, I did what I needed to do to get where I currently am. When I was OTR, I never turned down a load no matter how short it was. If it was a local to get myself a empty trailer, then so be it. My next load after that was out of the area. Learn, listen, ask questions and be patient. Most dispatchers have about 40-50 drivers under them. This is not a easy job for any of us. Be safe and I look forward to seeing this thread grow:biggrin_255:!

Unfortunately, I totally disagree that Knight should be on the "Good companies" thread. Just check out all the many, many negative posts about them throughout this forum. Start out by going to the "Bad companies to work for" page. Dont just go there, however. By all means, search all over this truckers forum for information about Knight. That being said, realistically, ALL the major, mega carriers pay poverty level wages and treat their drivers like dirt.
I'm going to be getting some negative feedback from other "posters" regarding this post so I will now give a challenge to them and to anybody else considering a career with ANY mega company: Personally go to any truck stop of your choice and physically speak with the drivers there. Speak to as many as possible. Ask them what can be expected regarding salary, conditions, average miles, health insurance costs, how many hours REALISTICALLY worked every week, etc.
Also of interest; Not many posts here on the "Knight:Good Companies to work for" thread. Been on here for nearly a week too...
Seriously, these jobs are so lousy that just about any other job is better. Working at a Wal-Mart, Pizza Hut, or a 7/11 pays just as well and you dont have to live away from your family either.

I am copy and pasting my posts from the other thread. Just want people to know how my experience with knight has been, might give a more balanced view.

Ok, So I was browsing the interwebs for the heck of it tonight why I do my 10 hours and came across this thread, so I figured I would add my 2cents. :biggrin_2556:

So, I have worked for Knight now for just over a Year I work for the Refrigerated side of the company. (Basically the red headed stepchild of knight)

I stay here because I like the terminal and my DM is honest, friendly and pass's me miles. Also when I want home time I'm shot that way right away, if I need a day off he has me back there the day before I need to be home. They never complain about my home time or how much time I take off. I cleared last year just over 52k for OTR and that's with me taking sometimes a week + off for home time. Needless to say they are decent to me which is more then I can say for 90% of the company's out here.

I just wanted to add this for people to try to get a balanced view. I would agree with other posters try a different terminal or a new DM It may help out loads. Ill stay here until they quit treating me like a human the money is decent for my needs and my wife and kids see me often.

Also, Just on a mileage here is what I have ran sense Wednesday of this last week.

Boise, ID to Huntley IL. Delivered
Chicago to Phoenix AZ (Current Run - Ill be in Phoenix Yard in the morin) "Drop"
Total Mileage just under 3500 Miles and its only Sat! will be Sunday when I drop this load in the Yard.
Next load will most likely be a Casa Grande load to Salt lake City.

Please don't mislead people on Mileage or loads. If your willing to work the Miles are always there. And if the company knows you will do your job they always seem happy to give them up.

    Bigdubber Thanks this.

    I will add this.

I have seen and talked to disgruntle drivers before that work for knight why I was stopped in the yard from time to time. They are out there and for one reason or another had a bad experience with the company. Over my time here I have noticed it to be tied to some terminals tho I wont name them that's where alot of it seems to come from.

I really think my experience has been positive due to the Terminal and the Management I have. I also work for the Refrigerated side of the company not the Dry side (2 sep company's with sep management) So that could be it also.

All I do know is I'm content with where I am for now and just wanted to let people know why. Every company has there crap, You just have to find one that you can deal with said crap and they can deal with yours.

Bigdubber and Side Box Thank this.

Again, I'm not at all discounting anyone's experience at all, I'm just adding my experience to the mix and my time with Knight. Any company you work for is going to have issues it's whether you can deal with those issues or not, that's what makes your experience what it is.

Also just on another note, Knight has over 3500 Dry trucks and just over 700 Refer trucks. This makes 4200 Drivers there is going to be people that have bad experience especially in the trucking industry. There are also going to be people that have good experiences. I was just pointing out the people that have the bad experiences are just more likely to go post about it then people that are happy with what they are doing.

Again I think Good management plus a good terminal makes all the difference.

    Edit.
On the note of Miles from the last post I don't struggle or compete for miles, Maybe its just the relationship I have with my DM I don't know but my miles are always decent.

When I picked up this International it had 22700 on it the Truck now has 84391 I got the truck in September It's now the end of Jan. I have put 61691 miles on the truck, Avg this out to Per month at 5 months is 12,338 then do it by 4 weeks is 3,084 per week. I also take home time frequently or my wife and kids would have my head, You do the math.

The miles are there but it takes Good relationship with your DM good management and a decent terminal and good work ethic to succeed, At least that has been my experience. I'm out here to support my family, That's my Drive for this job.

I'm not going to bash your post. You are right in some ways. I do think it is a good idea to go and actually ask drivers in these larger companies what they think and feel. This is a hard industry to be in and not cut out for everyone. As for working in the Walmart stores, I wouldn't. They treat their employees worse than their drivers. It has been shown in articles in papers and news reports. Joe, you have been in trucking for 2 years? Who do you drive for now that is better than when you were at Knight? Just curious.

Your best bet would be to take with the recuriter at that terminal. Also look for some Reefer trucks with Tulare on the side box and talk with them. Maybe the drivers can give you an idea as well. I am on a Macy's account and happened to fall into it. Hope that helps you out.
