Only team loads I have seen for van were hauling prescription drugs.

And they never gave me the rates on those.

Let deadhead a day away for a profit of 85c a mile. Honestly if times were tough its better than nothing, but no I wouldn't do it.

Flat bed companies the pay mileage or flat bed fleece purchase companys that pay mileage would book these loads. The pay .98 per mile plus fuel empty and loaded so they make a little by letting their slaves pull these types of loads. They pay little DH and their drivers are happy because all they want are miles, plus they don't have to worry about finding another load for a week.

It's sad to know that any broker can go to a TS and pick up a free mag and see what all the cheap carriers are paying and adjust their rates to match.

"Blanche" is "fishing" for information.... so, I'll provide a little... someone getting 5.8 mpg paying $4 a gallon for fuel is paying .689 cpm , now a heavy load in the mountains and across the windy plains..... a driver is going to be looking at 5.3 to 5.8 mpg, and that's not including any time spent idling the truck or running an apu..... just for the sake of argument let's look at what 5.5 mpg and $4.28 a gallon does.... .77 cpm.... we haven't calculated maintenance, or repairs, or replacement of things that wear out.... haven't calculated cell phone bills, trip-pak costs, equipment payments, insurance payments.... the fixed costs of being on the road are well north of $100 a day.....

I have a question for Blanche, just out of curiosity.... what should a driver get, in terms of cpm, as a ROI, (return on investment)?

And shouldn't the owner of the equipment be getting paid substantially more than they would if they were just an employee??

Most businesses attempt to double their money, you know, if it "costs" $1.10 to $1.20 to operate then it's not unreasonable to expect to make $2.20 to $2.40.... Why would anybody assume the risks of buying equipment and operating as an owner if all they were going to earn was the same amount as the average employee???

That other $4800 is equivalent to an income of $57,600 per year, at 10000 miles a month. I don't think that is asking too much at all....actually, it is low for an owner operator. There is nothing wrong with getting paid a fair wage. Especially going into an area where you are virtually guaranteed to get diddly squat coming back out. You have to think realistically if you want to stay in business and make a good living. The shippers still have not acknowledged the fact that they have to come off the dime, and start paying accordingly. Freight rates have not come up appropriately, when you consider the skyrocketing cost associated with running a truck.
