[h=5]*** GREAT NEWS re: owned Brother Emmons:
Engine 281 was struck by a tractor trailer while on the scene of a separate incident this morning on the Beltway near Rt 50 sending 4 of our members to PG Trauma Center.
Three of our members were treated and released. One member, Lieutenant Ryan Emmons was transferred to Union Memorial in Baltimore to undergo surgery on his right arm and is listed in critical condition.
*** Surgery is now completed and Ryan's arm has been reattached and has good blood flow.
The same Dr that did Ryan's surgery just last month, did a successful surgery on a rare double arm transplant on a 26-year-old infantryman at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Chief Alter is at the hospital along with his friends and family.
At this time Ryan is NOT allowed visitors. Please keep Ryan in your thoughts and prayers.
West Lanham Hills VFD thanks everyone's calls, message, and all the departments that offered help. It is much appreciated.
*** This is such awesome news !!![/h] -
Such great news, I hope he recovers real quick.
I read the internet on the transplant on the soldier and it is amazing what they can do. It is going to take awhile for the nerves to reatttach and a lot of physical therapy. I hope he doesn't bore too easy being off. -
The information on the accident is slowly coming out.
It appears the fire truck was leaving the scene and making a U turn with no emergency lights on when it was struck.
This is from Washington Post.
Late Wednesday afternoon, Prince George's County Police released their preliminary findings on the accident which had the Beltway closed for hours, saying the fire engine was just leaving an accident call when it tried to make a U-turn at an emergency vehicle access point. Police say the engine collided with a tractor trailer, which sources say had the right of way. The two trucks slid into the median and hit a Jeep SUV. In all, seven people were hurt, including four firefighters.
This is from the press release from the county police
In a briefing Wednesday afternoon, Prince George's County Police say the crash occurred when Engine 828 was leaving the scene of a collision near Route 50 and used an emergency crossover. Police Lieutenant William Alexander says the pumper did not use lights and siren as it made the u-turn and was struck in the rear by a tractor trailer. Lt. Alexander told WRC-TV/NBC4 that, "Preliminarily we believe the tractor trailer was the favored driver". (NOTE: The Washington Post, below, reports a different scenario of the crash from Chief Alter). -
many many times i have seen maintenance and emergency personnel do stupid things on the road
it seems they are so engrossed in their emergency, they forget that traffic is still moving by them
