i have been driving a volvo truck for about 2 years now ,and just moved into a freightliner fld 120 with 10 speed eaton fuller ,at times i drive the truck smoothly and sometimes i drive it as if it the first time, quit frustrating ,been trying to practice on double cluching today and it did not work out well ,gears were engaging quit alright but the gear box makes a noise like something is droping inside, when i do not use the clutch i can move the gears from 2-5 no prblem and very smooth, how do i practice without spoiling the gear box

I can remember sitting on the toilet and using a plunger as a shifter for practice. Other than that, it just comes with time. Honestly, I think a lot of it is you psyching yourself out. If you can drive it smoothly sometimes, you can do it at any time. Just need to get your head in the game.

Stop thinking about it and just do it. if you worry too much you get nervous and that's when you mess up. it will take a bit of time, but you will get it
Knotme Thanks this. -
will definately work on that one .
thank you -
Watch your clutch depth. If you find you are pushing in too far, raise your seat up, or vice-versa if you aren't pushing in far enough. Sounds simple & stupid but it helps me.Last edited: Feb 3, 2013

don't forget that 6th gear is in the "Low" hole and you have to grab it. When I drove the 10 spd, that was my biggest mistake all the times it seemed.

ok will watch that on as well thank you,i really want to master this machine

The difference between 5th and 6th is so minimal I never use it on the way up... 5th to 7th. I use 6th when down shifting to stop or as a "turning gear" but I never use it upshifting and never down shift below it.
I pretty much run it as an 8 speed -
Is it a new truck? A new clutch needs practice. I traded in my 2012 Cascadia with 350k on it for a new ProStar and felt like an idiot shifting for a couple of weeks.

Exactly!! I had to post a question on here about it. Once I was told about sixth being in the low hole things smoothed...mostly.
