Most copper mines won't let you because it's not something that is required to be tarped, so yeah they don't want the liability... same with receivers. I think companies want drivers to tarp because of the load value .... IMO at least..

at system we get a flat 30 dollars for tarping and untarping. but we also get that same 30 dollars when we pick up a pre loaded trailer thats already tarped so that is nice. my question is how long does it generally take you guys to tarp a load that requires two tarps? from securement to tarping its been taking me an average of 1.5 to 2 hours total and im wondering if thats a decent time or too long?
-
Depends on the load. I can have a full length, 2 tarp lumber load (or anything shaped similarly squared) done in a half hour. Or even a steel load. It's the whacky shape loads or the ones that take a lot of padding that take a few hours
-
generally ive been hauling lots of aluminum blocks and skids of aluminum plate that require two tarps but are nice and square. i am getting quicker but hoping that im not totally slow compared to everyone else
-
Screw everyone else. As long as you still make delivery on time, take as long as you need to make it nice and right... nice jobs don't get as many tears which won't make you waste time with repairs

I have found that a lot of the loads that I get that need to be tarped arent because of weather considerations but because the shrinkwrap will blow off and the pallett may come apart. I have tarped in many places that wont allow you to tarp where you load but you can tarp right next to the yard because they own that land too. I have had to use the tarping stations with catwalks on each side but no overhead protection. If you fall off your load you are gonna get wedged between the catwalk and your truck. Not sure how that makes it safer. I have been lucky so far as to only have one place not lift my tarps on the load for me. It was a load of lumber out of Whitehouse Fl. I thought the forklift driver was qualifying for a Nascar race the way he pealed out of there when it came time to lift it up. They also made me leave the property to tarp.

Unfortunately tarping is part of the job in flat decking. I've seen some companies pay $15.00 each time a driver has to touch the tarps as well as $20.00 for the pick/drop. Others may pay $50.00 but generally the ones who pay $50.00 don't pay your first Pick or Drop so they make it up there.
Owner Operators with our company already have it in their percentage 80% of gross with fuel surcharge on top of that so with them it's not a concern.
Personally I would give the drivers $50.00 for tarping and un-tarping but with a caveat they don't turn in more than a set number of damaged tarps per month. If your paying alot of repair bills because the driver is too lazy to pad the load the rate needs to drop accordingly until they figure it out. -
Those things are a joke.

I don't mind those...I just get close to one side, leave minimal spacing and work from one side. Most of the catwalk tarp jobs I justopen my tarps out and pull out anyways, since you cant work around the truck while in them,

The one I used was a mud pit.
