COILS: Chains+straps or just chains?

Those are usually aluminum ones .... I refuse to secure steel coils with straps .... But you will damage aluminum with chainsLogan76 Thanks this.

I've hauled a bunch of palleted eye to the sky copper coils, they usually only weighed around 6-7k a piece though...

I agree, but in all my years trucking & numerous d.o.t. inspections, I always had the officer scrutinize the chains & binders. never once ask about my rub rail load limit.

Yea, few do even though they could. Although, I have met more than one driver that got cited for cracked welds on spools or stake pockets that had chains hooked around them.CAXPT Thanks this.

Yes. Most places want you to use straps on aluminum. Or tin. However, some will let you use chains if you have the steel chain protectors with rubber on the bottom, and also if you throw a felt pad under that. I just throw straps anyways, save the hassle. -
that is why Melton has us do everything at 4k...we use 5/16 chains and binders, but our trailers are rated at 4000 lbs, and it is marked on the majority of them as such.

I gotta be honest...ran a load last week that I actually threw the straps over the tarps.
Load of fertilizer in southern Florida, I only had 8' drops and only needed 4' drops....and it was a 4 stop load.
I knew that after the first stop, I was pulling the #@$!&%$ tarps off, so I cheated.
I know I have sinned, and beg for forgiveness...
