Is anyone else having issues with emissions on 08 cat engines? Bought two new 08 388 petes in May started out first 3 months with average milage 4.8 on one and 5.3 on the other. By the 4th month check engine lights have been coming on and engine ecu derates hp and there you sit. We have been to the shop for updates from cat roughly 10-11 times with each truck in the last month and been to 3 different cat shops. Had to get one towed once! Two issues here for me is I'm tired of looking for the next cat shop! And most costly to this issue now is for the last 2 months my milage has dropped to 3.2 on one and 3.4 on the other! Cat says there is nothing wrong with the engines, and that I am expecting too much from them. I am to the point were I am starting to believe them maybe I am expecting too much!! But why would they get 5mpg the first 3 months and now after 50-60000 miles they barely get 3mpg. I feel there particulate trap is plugged but the only way they will change it is if it fixes the problem they will warranty it but if it don't then I have to pay for it. Cat notified me today that the cost of this filter trap is $6700.00 dollars for EACH TRUCK! They are designed to be cleaned "BUT" they don't have the machine avaliable YET to do it!! I talked to my Pete dealer this afternoon, he specing me out two new 388's with cummins engines. What else can I do?

    Flatop,
Your not alone with issues on your Cat. When your engine begins to derate, the ECM should have already tried to let you know that the DPF is starting to load with soot and needs regeneration.
What position is the 3 position dash switch in?
Is it possible you you have it all the way down?
If so, the engine cannot regen itself.
How many miles on your engine? Have you been adding the blue fuel cleaner every other oil change as recommended to keep the CRS head clean?
You maywant to visit Cat's website for additional maintenance tips. They also have some prety good video clips on operation and maintence etc.
Another thing would be to visit with your Cat dealer in Omaha and see what they might have for product updates....there have been a few of them since early production began.

e500gvr: I don't know how the ecu is to warn me that it is about to derate me engine? As far as the 3 position switch it is in the automatic mode. It is not all the way down. Currently I have apprx. 60000 miles on one unit and 70000 on the other. As far as the blue "windex"cleaner goes it was done as follows: Break in oil ran till 20,000 miles, Changed. Ran till 42000 miles changed oil again. At 42500 check engine light came on took to cat blow by filter was pluged. Cat changed blow by filter and put blue cleaner in system. 2 days later check engine light on again, filter plugged again, changed filter and put cleaner in it again. To make a long story short, all updates are now suppose to be done. These engines have a tremendous amount of blow by-Rear main seals have been changed. Have blown out one turbo. On one of the updates they rerouted the air intake for the regeneration system from the aircompressor. I guess the engine was pulling oil passed the comppressor and it took out the spark plug and its componets of the regeneration system which was why it derated on one instance.Cat now is tell me to use the cleaner every 10000 miles instead of the original recommended 40000 miles and to change the blow by filter every 20000 miles instead of the recommended 60000 miles. As all this has unfolded in the past 2-3 months my fuel milage has not recovered! Once the check engine lights started coming on and all these problems started to surface my milage was 4.8 to 5.3 before now is 3.2-3.4 I wouldn't be so pissed if I would never have gotten the 5 mpg-but those engines were doing it from the start -if anything it should be getting better as they break in instead of worse! Cat says it was a fluke that they did it, but two trucks = two flukes. They also tell me I'm the only one having issues! Oh one other thing when the ecu derates, it does not give you a warning in advance. And if you are in GODS county the middle of no were, top speed at that point is 25-30mph on the flats try climbing a grade or two! Flatop:biggrin_25510:

Prior to any derate of power, you should be seeing the following lamps:
1st, if the DPF lamp is flashing and the Check Engine lamp is off, the ECM is requesting an automatic regeneration but the Inhibit( Disable) switch is in the Inhibit position. If the switch is placed back in the Automatic (or not inhibited position) and you continue to drive, the DPF lamp will stop flashing and Automatic Regen will occur.
2nd, If you see the DPF lampcome on solid, then you need to iniate a manual regen asap.
    3. Should you see the DPF lamp flashing AND the check engine lamp is on solid, it means the soot load is at level 3 and regen needs to occur asap. If you ignor it and continue to drive, then the engine will progressively derate down to a HP level which will limit maximum speed.
At this point, continued operation and limping along you will see a flashing RED Stop Engine Lamp. In about 30 seconds the engine will shut off. It will restart but, if you don't force a manual regen, the engine will only run for 60 seconds at a time.

to flattop, yes we are having so much trouble we our 2008 c15. it's been more trouble than it's worth and we are going to see our lawyer on monday. it has been an expensive and heart breaking lesson not to be one of the first ones to drive new technology trucks. doug is currently on his way back home and will post a note after our appointment monday. in the past 4 months our "new" truck has been in the shop countless times. the mpgs were good for the first 12k and after that we've been lucky to get 3.5 - 4 mpg. this can't go on too much longer, we've had enough.

Where do you have it worked on...St. Cloud?
    Cat dealer or truck dealer?
I have heard there are several field updates available to address various issues. Have they been done? Lawyers can't fix trucks, dealers can.

    EVERYONE is having problems.

Lawers are probably the only ones who can fix these problems.

I have not talked to anybody yet who is happy with a 08 CAT,which is a big disapointment. If you buy new cummins is the way to go now.

Cat will only be building truck engines for semi trucks until 2010, In 2006 cat started experimenting with newer engines to see how they would perform in our indusrty and then take the data and use them in their construction vehicles. Thats why you see KW going with cummins instead of cats now because of all the problems the newer cats have had. As far as the older model cats go, parts are getting hard to come by and they will cost you a fortune. I wouldn't buy a new truck with a Cat, Just look in the truckpaper and you'll see how many newer trucks are for sale with the cat
