I have been accused of having a horseshoe placed somewhere uncomfortable.

And I have been asked...."How do I do it?"

    one word people....

    Communication....

Call people, keep them informed WHAT is happening.

Go out of your way and keep them informed. Email, text message, phone calls. HOWEVER you want to do it.

    Just.

    Communicate.

I am sitting here after hours getting unloaded. They stop receiving at 4 PM. It's now 6:50 and they are unloading me. I wasn't scheduled until 6:30 AM.

I called from 130 miles away at 3PM and communicated WHAT was happening and when I would be there. I was 10 minutes earlier than I told them I would be. The receiver was surprised.

A lady has now come and gone 3 times since I got here at 5:15 PM. Her appointment was for 3 pm. She didn't arrive until 5 PM.

She didn't communicate what was going on.

    And she is MAD.

The only explanation I have for possessing that horseshoe.

I communicate with my brokers and shippers/consignees.

MnDriver, you are 100% correct! it's amazing @ how difficult some steering wheel holders CHOOSE to make their life because they won't/don't communicate. Pick up the phone and call your shipper and ensure 1) that the load is there and 2) that you can load it. Similarily call the receiver and 1) ensure that he will take the product and 2) that he is expecting the product.
Extremely simple things that driver don't do that contribute to their self made misery.

I was on a "hot" load and called the guy every couple hours. Finally he says "you call me more than my old lady!"

    I got the message.

I don't get the horseshoe reference. Care to explain? I mean, it's obvious through context what you mean, but I guess it's not something I've ever heard.

I once was making an LTL pickup in Columbus, GA after making my first pickup in western PA. We were combining loads to head back to El Paso. We originally had a 2nd pickup in Pittsburg but it cancelled. I was told to head south to Wytheville, VA and standby. Was dispatched to a pickup in Columbus, GA. My dispatcher said the info on the load said that I had until 8pm local time to pickup. But by the time I got through the Atlanta traffic, my ETA was 8:30. Just to be safe, I called the shipper to ask if they would wait or if I needed to come in the morning. They told me that they actually loaded until 11pm, but my load hadn't been picked yet and wouldn't be ready until the morning anyways. They did have a drop lot where I could park overnight if I chose to but they didn't have any facilities for drivers between 11pm and 7am. Rather than park there, I parked at the Pilot near Newnan, GA for the night. I also called my dispatcher and let him know.

One of the ingrediants needed for this biz.....communication and time management. Reminds me of the time I loaded in L.A. on a Friday morning with a Monday appt in Phoenix. 3 days to go 400 mi. But wait, Communication, right ? Yeah, a quick call to the consignee to verify Monday's appt and then a quick question asking about the possibility of a Saturday delivery. Lo-n-behold folks, the warehouse manager who I was talking to said, normally not open on Saturday, however this Saturday they were doing some warehouse work with a skeleton crew and would receive my delivery if there by noon !

If you get the context, you understand the meaning.

In short, why don't I get stuck on docks all the time and how is it I maximize my week to the fullest.

Horseshoe, luck. He's accused of being lucky, instead of smart.

Yeah, that was what I was looking for, didn't think about luck and horseshoe lol. I was thinking more on the lines of preferential treatment rather than luck earlier. Guess that's why the horseshoe reference went right over my head.
