Hey Volt, I'll give a call to those other two, and by the way it's Swift and CRST that will take me. But after viewing the posts from Newtrucker48 it looks like Swift it the better choice. Plus I don't think I want to be a team driver anyway. Thanks for your input

Provide some legal documents from your former business, like a tax return or something.
Yes, Covenant sure is in business. They are out of TN I believe. Seem like very nice people; I see their trucks around quite often and they are late model ... Good and clean looking too.
Even though you are in CA, they will bring you out there.
Also, for your years at home, you could provide a notarized statement from someone you know, that you were a SAHD. -
Both Covenant and US Xpress are out of The Chattanooga,TN area. I can't speak for Covenant, but I know US Xpress is a decent company. I work for a smaller carrier out jackson, mississippi that's owned by US Xpress and I have no complaints. There are the standard complaints that you hear about all the bigger companies, but most of their drivers I run into ( a lot because we share terminals and drop yards all over the country) seem to be relatively happy.
Speaking of which, KLLM's headquarters are behind us and they have a place in Fontana, CA. I know as recent as a few months ago they were giving "scholarships" to a local truck driver school. I think it was actually the state community college, which is usually a little better than the for-profit places. They were asking for a year commitment, which is usually standard with the starter companies that provide training. I don't know if they are doing the same deal in CA as in MS, but you could always ask. They are always looking for someone to drive the lettuce wagons from out here.
Good luck to you with whatever happens. -
You'll be ok. The ones that go to orientation and get sent home are the ones that get caught lying. As far as self-employed, I've gotten 3 different corporate trucking jobs that said nothing about the work. They just needed verified info from people I done work for. Your case, you just need verifies you were retired. So give them a couple friends/family that will tell them that. You'll be good.
As far as starter companies, there are many. They all have their evils and good points. Large carriers pay less, but they also are less likely to skip on paying you, or running out of money and can't afford to get you home on fuel. Didn't happen to me, but a friend of mine.
Good luck.
