Dear Truck school students:
I am a flatbed truck driver, I followed in my dad's footsteps, who was also a flatbed truck driver for over 30+ years. When I got out of trucking school he gave me some advice that I want to pass on to you, it went something like this;
"Son...I've been driving truck since 1967!
Back then, when they were talking peace and love, I was busy putting the hammer down, so if there's one thing I have learned in this business, it's this....
NOBODY LIKES TRUCKERS
Not shippers
receivers
dispatchers
cops
four-wheelers
other truckers
and even the girl at the Flying-J
NOBODY LIKES TRUCKERS....except for
Little kids and
Homeless people
Little kids......
...because you got a big horn
and
Homeless people....
...because you got a big sleeper"
Advice for the trucking school students.....NOBODY LIKE TRUCKERS!

I don't know about this, the last little kid that I passed that gave me the air horn motion, gave me the finger when I didn't do it and drove by. The homeless guy? He also knows and easy mark for a sad story to fuel his/her drug/drinking problem. The rest of what your pop told you I agree with.mje Thanks this.

I don't know,4 wheelers just don't care,I think the lack of training is cause for issues with the cops, kids still like big trucks.
mje Thanks this. -
I've seen some of it, but not enough to think ALL people hate us. Some are mis-informed and some just don't care.
mje Thanks this. -
No matter what job we do there are days we all feel like everybody hates us. Need thick skin and a good wife.
Snowshoes Thanks this. -

I like truckers... heck, I'm married to one!
I must be a big kid, because at age 36, I still love the trucks & the horns! Most (not all!) truck drivers I've come in contact with have always been nice and respectful.
Here's a little story - I worked as a Sr. Project Engineer (construction) a few years back and was in charge of not only the projects themselves, but the men & women working on those projects. Many of my colleagues assumed that I was in that position because I had slept my way there. And they probably formed that opinion because of some other woman that may have done questionable things to "earn" her way up.
So, you see - a few bad apples can make the entire bunch appear to be bad.Swimmin' Deep Thanks this. -
What job is there that people like you because of what you do? I can only think of a handful. Even when you do something that provides a useful service directly to individual customers all you're thought about is the guy that just charged them money to do it.
WV_Daddys_Girl Thanks this. -
We have had dedicated runs with the same shippers and receivers for over 15 years . They like most of us . Every carrier has its few misfits .
I've also had quite a few pretty friendly DOT inspectors . Before my last CDL renewal KY started marking Veteran on CDL's . I think that helps some .
Dispatcher ? Before we are assigned a load we are sent an e-mail asking if we want it . Dispatchers have sent out prayer requests for drivers when they or their family members are having medical problems . -
Don't feed the trolls.
formertaxidriver and seamallowance Thank this.
