What's it like being an O/O? Is there good money to be made in it? My hubby currently hauls crude in ND and brings home an average $1,800 a week (net). But he's never home. And when he does come home, there's the expense of the flight (to IL). Now we are kicking around maybe him becoming an O/O. Preferring to haul hazmat and driving a tanker, we are hoping that might open more doors for him/us as an O/O. If he can get home once every two weeks or every three weeks and make the same kind of money he's making now, that'd be just awesome. Is that even possible? He got LLC'd back in 06 or 07 and then the economy tanked and things got ugly for everyone. As far as the economy goes, maybe I'm wrong but it seems things are turning around a bit now. We are researching and doing our homework. Not in any hurry. He doesn't want to do OO in ND as the trucks get tore up too fast there. What to do? What to do? This is scarey stuff. Any feedback/suggestions would be appreciated.

are you ready to beat the heck out of a truck AND spend the money to repair it?

Have him record everything that breaks down on the truck.

I just re-wired JUST the tail lights on my tractor. It cost me $40 in material. To wire in two 4" round turn/stop/tail lights and a back up light for about 2 feet. And that was ME doing the labor.

How about the rest of the maintenance?

The off-road environment that goes on in the oil fields is HARSH on trucks in a mild sense.

Why doesn't he get a reefer/dry van and work around Chicago. It's alot easier on the body and the home time.

Sounds like pretty good money up there for not having any of the problems of owning one. Have you ever thought about you moving up there so you can be closer to him?

In my opinion, he's making more NET money right now than he will as an O/O.

O/O can be good money, not as good as he is doing now but still good money with the right company, the freedom to be home when he wants.keeping records of repairs now won't really do any good, different environment and conditions,I do most of my own light repairs and maintenance so it helps keep down over head ,keep doing your homework talk to prospective companies and get a list of their requirements. Good Luck.

This has been helpful, thank you all. Unfortunately, moving to ND is not an option. A couple of recruiters here in IL have said he could make 4G a week after expenses. I find that a little hard to believe. To make a weekly 1,800 net in ND is not easy...the reality is insane hours, extreme conditions, no family, etc. So when we hear "...4G after expenses...", it's hard not to start thinking. :) Maybe it depends on what you haul. We'll continue to research, talk to people, etc....definitely not jumping into anything.

Well, I did basically what you are talking about.

I just slipped the part of working in the oil fields entirely and went straight to o/o. Bought my truck last July.

Best career move I ever made.

If I could NET that much after all expenses, including repair/maintenance account, taxes, health insurance, on a week after week basis, then I would still be an O/O. The truth is...you can't. Not as a weekly average. That would be $93,600 a year after taxes and the other expenses mentioned. Not going to happen as a single truck operation.
