Hey fellas and gals;
I need some advice on what to do. Heres a little about the situation.
I ran team with my father in an old t600 2003 Cleveland to Cali. The t600 has been paid off for a few years. We ran hard. We bought a new truck. We are leased to a company. We got a new route NJ(where we live) to Cali. Weve been on this run for almost 2 years. The money is good.. But we roll every week.
Since our old t600 was sitting and the company we are leased to knows that, they asked if we wanted a driver. We had been thinking to put a driver anyway, so we did it.. Just 2 months earlier than we wanted, we wanted to help the guy out.
He has been running solo, and my father and i run team. Now for the impoortant stuff
my brother in law came from Europe and went to driving school. Got his CDL and we put in an application with the company we are leased to. I did the same thing a few years ago and got the job. Unfortunetly last week they said no due to new company policy new drivers need 1 yr min experience.
My farther and i have been planning to get our own authority since day 1. The company we are leased to allows o/o s with their own authority to lease their company with them.
Would this be a "good idea" ?
I want for my bro in law to work. We have options of buying a new truck for me and my dad. We could take the solo driver we have now and put a team in the truck me and my dad drive now. Possibly sell that t600 or find a solo for it.
Would insurance be crazy high since my bro in law has no experience? Would we even find an insurance company that will insure him?
Again we dont want to loose this route, we are open to load boards and i know the deal with brokers and direct freight. What are everyones thoughts, advice, questions?
Again right now its 1 paid off truck 1 with a payment 2 paid off trailers and one under rent. 1 team 1 solo 1 guy i want to put with the team. Plus down the road lease other o/o s to us and hire company drivers.....
Need advice..

Why not let your brother in law get his one year experience with a starter company, then bring him over to where you are now, or bring him on under your own authority at that time. I guess my thought process is let him use and abuse someone else's equipment to get his experience.
Container Hauler Thanks this. -
I paid for his driving school and he passed with flying colors he drove in Europe and understands the concept of parking a trailer. I understand your thinking, and i do agree. I know rome wasnt built in one day but i want to get up and running. It would be more money also. I want to get him rolling too thats why he came here, because of the oportunity..he would be making a hell of a lot more than he would be in Europe.

it sounds like you have your mind made up but most insurance companies have a 300 miles radius for new drivers. if you do find one they are probaly going to be higher. and how will the other driver feel about you making him team. if you truly believe he is ready i would go for it and if he is willing to team just get add another truck for him and a new driver, but the only thing with that is you better have a back up plan if things get slow with your company. cause now you have three families depending on you when things get slow. Good luck and wish you the best..

The solo driver I have now is a great guy and a fantastic driver. He used to team before he started driving for us; and i have spoke with him alreafy and he doesnt mind going back to team. The company we are leased to now does get slow sometimes but not like not rolling for months at a time.
if we get own own authority do we have to lease on All the trucks we own to them or can we lease 2 trucks and the other ones get load boardloads? Or from other shippers? -
if you have your own authority you are free to do whatever you please. with your own authority they are only dispatching you. this could cause a problem because most likely they will want you to bring all your trucks on with them. before you make this decision you have to sit down with your ole man and weight the pros and cons.
Would it work for you if you just leased all your trucks to that company?
Once you get your authority who will do the paper work if yal are still teaming?
IMO i would lease the trucks first and on the other hand i would be finding customers to haul for once i get my authority. I wouldn't just depend on load boards. -
Will anyone want to even do business though if i were to do that? "hey i dont have my own authority yet, but im looking for loads, can you help"? Ill get my authority and take the leased trucks off?
