Is it just me or do some of you old timers see our ''NET'' getting smaller and smaller.I just finished up on my taxes and all my deductions. It just amazes me how much we as O/O's pay our business partners...It amazes me the ''bottom'' number and then income Tax on that.
My business partners make alot of money off my Honest Hard work.Oil Companies,Ins Companies,Toll Roads,Maint,Workers Comp,Trans Flo,Comdata and the rest of the vultures...LMAO..It amazes me that these vultures have scored BIG on the shirt tail of the working men and woman in this country...
Needless to say i have watched my ''net'' get smaller and smaller in the 25 years of doing busuniss as...Does anyone else see this trend year after year in trucking....?..My cost of business goes up every year and the rates stay the same..I sure hope i can hang on tight till retirement..And here is the KICKER.My equipment is paid for.I just could not see having a ''payment'' and higher Ins..This has to force men and woman to almost LIVE in there trucks...
One thing rings in my ear. Many years ago the old timers always talked about the 1/3..Does anyone remember that. They always said you bring home a 1/3 of the gross.I have to say the old timers were spot on.It seems i am around a 1/3 of my gross year after year.
Is it just me..

The 1/3 rule has always been a good rule of thumb, for many years.1/3 for me,1/3 to operate the truck [ road & mechanical expenses ], and 1/3 for the truck [ payments, insurance, etc ].
My net has been staying around the same, but I have had to change my business plan some to do it. Lesser truck, fewer gadgets, watching my pennies more, quicker to raise rates, more charges for doing 'extra' services for shipper. It is harder to keep a buck, but I am grossing more. -
Good post. I just had almost the same conversation with my wife after doing my preliminary tax calculations. I'm questioning whether the investment in equipment, insurance, etc is worth it anymore. I guess trucking has always been a game of small margins but small is turning to a sliver it seems. I try everyday to figure out how some guys stay in business hauling for the rates that are offered.

shortbustkid you hit the nail rite on the head, rates. guys are hauling produce from calf. for the same rates i got back in the 70s. truckers have always been there own worst enemy, with the statement i can do it a little cheaper than that. and these mega carriers are not helping at all with there rate structure either. i owned 7 trucks back in the 70s and i did have the same conversation with my wife you had.

When you do it the way the ''IRS'' wants you to do it,it leaves some money for us at the end.I am sitting right at the 1/3 mark again for last year.Mind you my old truck is paid for.I grossed out at around 150,000..
My taxes i have done are starting to shape up.It is looking at around 48,000 for this O/O..I will have to look at each catagory and see what i can save this year.At least try to analyze each catagory and try to make some changes to my ''plan''.Not sure where i can do this.It seems to be the same amounts every year..
An old timer friend of mine put's it this way.He sums it up pretty good.He says buying a truck is ''buying a job''.I would have to agree with him.
My cousin is in the trucker union.I talked to him today and he made 91,000 and he is home every night..I like doing what i do and do not wanna be a company man.But boy was that a kick right in the nuts.Them #### union guys....errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....lol,lol..I would say he is doing well. But i love my freedom. So i guess i have to keep paying for my freedom..On my report card from school it was always marked...''Does not work well with others''...

I think this post does not only relate to the trucking industry but many other industries as well. I could see it in my last job as well where the workers would have alot less salary than the people higher up the ladder. I think this is going on everywhere in the world right now.
