Here's the reason guys. (3rd gen trucker btw) Back in the 70s and 80s, everyone was happy, making good money (paper logs), the DOT was not as bad as they just recently got in 2010 with the csa2010. There was no recession. Freight was plentiful,(and please excuse me if i'm a bit vulgar in the next comment) plenty sxx, drg, rock n roll. You could run as hard or not hard as you wanted, which meant, you could be home at anytime you wanted to be.

Today, police and DOT has cracked down with all the new csa going on. This is not only for the drivers, but the owners of companies too. Now, with regulating the hours of service to a point that you can barely even make any real $.

Result? CDL mills pushing for profit(because now they need to find new ways) Unskilled new drivers coming from other industries(due to recession) 104% turnover rate, driver shortage(most real truckers threw in the towel) low rates, ect ect...

    Has all this saved lives?

yes, according to the DOT it has saved a whopping 1000 lives per year and increasing..

Wanna know why there are more lives being saved?

There's no trucks on the road! -case in point- " the driver shortage"

E-logs are ok i think, to a certain extent. I think most drivers would know how to use them and get around them if needed.

So you ask, what the heck ever happened to our indusrty? well, with everyone starving and broke, why would they be in a helpful mood? Most guys out here have little or no experience. They are just trying to learn how to truck. But that brotherhood you all talk about.....

    is gone.

Like my grandpa used to say. By the time you get there, i'm already halfway back! Now let's hit the taco stand, no, no! the one on the corner!:biggrin_2559:

A co-worker of mine dropped the trailer to swap trucks and he lowered the landing gear to far. When I pulled my truck under the tanker I couldn't get the pin out because the gear was still on the ground. A gentleman who must have been seventy came over with a wooden wedge and asked if he can assist me. He put the wedge in front of my time and had me drive up on it. He then proceeded to raise the gear for me. I was quite thankful for this simple but generous act from a veteran trucker. There are still many kind and helpful drivers out there.

Like Professor-trucker said, most of us that are still here are aging. That means that if we are not already gone, we will be soon. What does that leave. Just take a look at the present generation. Most have a me me attitude, and there is no room in their world for anyone else.

Therefore, unlike those of us from the past. We were orientated to not being selfish, do unto otheres as you would like them to do unto you mentality. I personally was taught that if you see someone down or needing help for God's sake help him. Because some day that could be you and hopefully there will be someone there for you.

I am not saying that there are not some left that still have the mentality I was taught. But they are far and few in between, and getting even more distanced. Now look at those new drivers. Most dont want to be there but it is the most lucrative jobs available in this present economy.

With that in mind, I wish you all well. Hope the brotherhood comes back, although I doubt it. Myself, I will be leaving soon so there is one more that wil be gone, while a friend of mine (also a driver) retired in December. Good luck.

You parked in a corner spot? You must not like your truck very much.

For alot of us we just understand it's not that necessary to get as involved anymore. I'm the first one to jump and help if there's a need, but I'm not gonna get on the radio to ask every steering wheel holder peeing on the shoulder if he's ok. There's almost a zero probability by the time I do come up on someone actually in need that they haven't already made contact with help through the phone or QC, the few times I have asked in my 7 years I've usually been rewarded with a "DO I LOOK LIKE I'M %^&#ING ALRIGHT?" if any reply at all. I got into trucking because on the whole, I don't like the way people act,and don't have to deal with them much. I'll take part when someone strikes up a pleasant conversation, offer a hand when I see it needed somewhere or asked for, and generally treat folks the way I want to be treated-alone to their own life.

I hate this, there are still good ones out here, but not many. the worse thing is when you are comming up on someone and clearly they are going slower than you and yu go out to pass and they speed up as fast as they can go so it takes much longer to get around them. then when you get by them they slow back down. comon
