I'm looking at a 97 international 8100 with a cummins m11 plus. When I went to see it yesterday it started up really nice even though it was freezing cold out. About 20-30 seconds after startup it shut down, so we started it back up and did the same thing. Finally on the third startup it stayed running. Now when it shutdown the water oil light was lite up. Any idea what could be the problem? Has anyone experienced this before? Could this be a big issue? The truck only has 195km/120miles.

    Thanks Cornish.

Either low oil or low coolant level could cause it to shutdown...Did you look at either prior to start up ??

I don't think it did use either for startup. The truck has less then 120k miles

Either before startup sorry. The truck is very clean and doesnt have many miles on it so I sure hope it doesn't use coolant or oil.

Low coolant or low oil pressure will cause the yellow, WARN ENG light to come on and maybe the red STOP ENG light. Those older dashes do have an OIL/WATER light that will come on when the key is on, but low or no oil pressure, or high coolant temp. These warnings are built into the cluster and may not necessarily be an indication something is wrong with either the oil or coolant system of the engine. The engine could have simply stalled from frozen water in the fuel lines or filter. Try the simple and cheap stuff first, replace the fuel filters and make sure the tanks have good fuel in them.

    Bertie Thanks this.
