i know the big 5 will never go away, but the little guys will and thats a shame. was at Chex's in Henderson, NC last night. the owner came in and sat at the next table. after a while he asked the drivers there how we'd feel about a $5 charge to park? he had done a survey earlier and found that 55% of the trucks parking in his lot, didn't spend any money there. he has seen his place go from a 24hr cafe to shutting at 10 pm and having only one cook and one waitress. Pilot opened up the way. he has everything pilot does. his place is old, he's been there for 54 yrs, but it is in good repair and clean. showers are only $8. he's adding in some "grab-n-go" foods to help while the kitchen is closed. he's trying to keep the doors open. if you spend money in the store or shop, you park for free. he's paying $1100 a month for trash cleanup and he and/or his employees have to sort it out for the recyclables. to keep his lot clean...you can imagine the things he has to pick up...but his lot is clean. he has a small motel upstairs. the lot is big enough for about 100 trucks and there is always parking available because he is off the hiway a bit, less than a mile, but because he's not visable from the hiway and there's a pilot up the road, he's getting passed up...too much. if you love independants, then please stop by and this place a shot, it just "speaks to you"

Ill save the independents when the independents clean up a bit. I've been to the Chex. Not a bad place but not particularly clean either. I can't deal with that.

I remember the ' good old days' when just about all we had were the independent places, and I really do miss them, with their down home atmosphere and real service to the trucker.Great cooking at most of them. They cared for us. I dislike the huge mega-stops we have now, but they are usually in a good location, offer more services, and are cleaner.
    The times, they are a-changing.

location will kill him more than he cares to admit. some of the places I go to, it's because I am ready to shut down and I see them.

Sorry, just how it is at times. I don't care to go chasing off my route any more than needed. It may only be "2 miles". But do that 100 times a year. That's now 200 miles. Add that into other expenses and going out of route for this, that and the other things, ....

It just adds up way to much to quickly. So I don't make it a habit. I'd drive 40 miles further on the same route to stop someplace other than a mega.

I agree with your statement. I like it when you find an independent that is clean and well kept. Problem is so many of them are filthy. Im sure its a battle to fight the big stops but a broom, dust pan and some pine-sol don't cost all that much.

The problem they face is they, as a group, are seen in the same way even if they are a nicer place. I would love to stay away from the megas and go to Mom and Pop's but as many have said, you just don't know what you are going to get.

It's old, probably not updated, and hard to find. That's his problem.

You nailed it with your last sentence.

It seems like they are the absolute best place to stop or the absolute worst.

What keeps me away from the independents is not being able to earn a shower credit at one and use it at another.
