I know the local delivery drivers where I live like it. Especially the Walmart bulk loads. The cases are already stacked on carts. Just deliver the loaded carts and pick up the empty ones.

The driver I dealt with when I worked at Walmart was pretty cool. He bemoaned the fact that his schedule meant that he hit the Anthony, NM port of entry on I-10 after midnight and that's when they turn off the PrePass. I told him to get his ### out of bed and leave at 10pm like Mike the coca-cola bulk driver did and hit the other store in town first before coming to ours.

 

Good luck, I would still be working there, but I didnt want to move out of state for a job. I see you are in Ks, they have a big plant in Topeka, I assume that's where you are applying. If you get hired, give it a chance, because it will be overwhelming at first, but just think $$$$$$$, and it gets better every day.

 

Frito lay is changing some things. Whereas before sales delivered to stores. Now big trucks do, the bigger stores Wal-marts, Hyvees...
If you're starting out, I was told it would be 70% lumping and 30% driving. There will be 100 new stores in KC that they will start direct
delivery to soon. Once you have two years in you can pick loads from the board. These go by seniority, so naturally those with most seniority
will take the lower paying and harder loads, in order to give newbies a break.

 

I'm starting there next week. Dad has driven for them for 33 years. That terminal is at most out overnight. They do have some sleepers out of some terminals, I think Topeka is one. I know I've met a guy running out of Topeka that has been to Rancho in CA and to Frankfort in IN.

If you're going to apply for it do it soon. They like to train their new drivers in the spring before the summer ramp up starts. The hiring process takes some time. After interviewing and taking a road test it was a good 3-4 weeks before I was told I was hired. They have a third party run a full background check and employment verification which takes some time. I did an interview and road test within a week of applying though.

I know some of their terminals operate differently for the new drivers. Some have an extra board you get placed on and you're basically on call. When you get a load your placed back at the bottom of the extra board and it keeps rotating through like that. By doing this they're able to distribute the work evenly among the guys with less seniority so the guy at the very bottom isn't sitting around with no work. Some put you on the load board right away and if you're at the bottom and there are no loads constantly at the bottom you're getting screwed. Make sure you find out which method they use.

Like Mrtbone said, you'll spend more time unloading more than driving for the most part. Even my dad who is #1 on the load board unloads about 30-40% of his work time. Some of the terminals have moved to delivering to stores some haven't but are expecting it. They did this in the past many years ago and went away from it again later. They seem to have things change quite a bit and it's actually something they'll ask you about a lot in interviews. Be prepared to answer questions about how you deal with change and examples of how you've dealt with it in the past. They also ask a lot of questions on interactions with customers and how you deal with say an irate customer.

 

The salesman used to deliver to our store in a small truck but they switched to ASN orders and the big trucks. The salesman still checked the cases in when he arrived, which was a few hours after the carts were dropped off. We brought them in and stowed them off to the side until the salesman arrived to process the paperwork. I loved the ASN vendors, made my job a helluva lot easier.
