I am looking into driving truck but one of the things i am concerned about is where i can safely park the truck when I am home. The problem i have is i live in the suburbs of Detroit; Madison Heights to be exact. My driveway is way too small to park it and i don't have any friends that would be able to let me park at their place. Can anyone give me any advice as to where i may be able to park it?
Thanks, Buckshot91

How about at the terminal of the company your going to work for. Or look around the area I'm sure you could find a daily yard to park in or rent a space by the month.

try lowes or walmart just ask the manager first

Many towing companies rent space. Most of the larger tow companies have contracts with the police to do accident tows. Thus they have 24 hr security. So, when you are on the road, your personal vehicle is safe and when your home you don't need to go check your rig all the time. And, when you pull in at 2 in the morning, you can get in and out of the lot.
Call around and get some prices, then go check out the yard. Make sure it is easy to get in and out. Then the big thing is to negotiate the price they quoted. When I found the lot I wanted the price quoted on the phone was $75 a month. I asked if I paid 6 mo. at a time could we get it down to $240. They said yes. So, when you are standing right in front of someone it is easier to negotiate than over the phone. On the phone, your talking to a dispatcher who was told to quote a price. When your at the lot you can talk to the manager or owner, who makes the decisions.mje and driverdriver Thank this. -
ok great... ill call around and check out some towing companies. Thanks!

Also search "truck parking heights detroit" on Google and see what comes up. Most larger cities have at least a few secured lots devoted to truckers and dedicated truck parking. But whether it's close to your house remains to be seen. The best idea is to work for a company who has a terminal reasonably close and that eliminates a lot of problems other then perhaps commute time.
Also, some companies (TMC for instance) are very particular about where you will park your rig on home time and want you to document this at orientation and ask that it be relatively secure or in a highly visible location. So you need to figure this out before you get to far down the road towards being hired.mje Thanks this. -
You live in Detroit...I don't think any company will allow you to park a truck in Detroit for home time. In fact, we have special conditions that we must abide by whenever we have to go to Detroit, as Detroit is a noted high crime area.

I rent a space from a trucking company near my home. They have a large lot that's gated with cameras so my truck and personal vehicle is safe.
Id look around at nearby operations like construction hauling outfits, cement plants, or freight yards go in and ask them personally. Remember to be polite, even though you might be paying for it, they are doing you a huge favorCondoCruiser and mje Thank this. -
When I use to live outside Chicago I had the same problem. Your company wants you to park the truck in a secure location. I rented a spot from a RV/boat storage facility for $50 a month. It was a gated fenced in area with video cameras. I parked my personal vehicle there and just swapped out when home. You have peace of mind that way and your company is happy.
Many drivers park at truck stops and have someone come get them. That's an option but it's really not secure and you open yourself up to possible theft. Dexter and Monroe, MI outside Detroit has truck stops that you could possibly park at or drop your trailer but they are a few miles away. There are more closer to you. Always get the managers permission which many will do. Truck stops always have truckers awake watching everything that moves in the parking lot so in a sense your truck is watched 24/7. But there is always the possibility of someone stealing fuel or breaking in which you do hear rare cases. In 15 years I might of heard a half dozen cases.
Another option is to find a local trucking company or even a diesel shop. Some know the deal and are sympathetic to OTR drivers.
I would be leary of store parking lots as you ask for a tow or break in.
Being in Detroit your company probably has several customers there. You might be able to park at one of them or at least drop your empty trailer and then you just have to deal with the truck which is much easier.
Looking on Google Maps look right beside Madison Heights Animal Control on Ajax Drive (behind Home Depot) is a RV storage. Maybe??mje Thanks this.
