I imagine a fatality would be a big deal to any one of us. Where it ranks in the bigger picture depends on the person though.

I have a boss who sends me jokes on texts... MOST of the time i dont know if he is serious or not because its JUST text. You dont know how he feels or how he's thinking. Im trying to put myself in HIS shoes. He screwed up. YES, Someone lost their life, YES, but hes probably looking at his children and wife and thinking about them hungry or cold.. and since all he's done is driven, hes trying to get advice on how to provide for his family. I dont know if you have a wife or kids, I do, and I would do anything ....ANYTHING to prevent my daughter from not having a good meal 3 times a day and a warm bed to sleep in. He may not have used his text, he may be in denial (People cope differently), But hes on here not to get judgement, but to get advise on how to provide for his family... In your head he should be in a corner crying under a table till his house and family is gone,. Hes trying to step up and provide.. Instead of saying, "Maybe find a shunt truck job" or something... you just judge. His fault or not, put yourself in his shoes. would you fight to keep your family healthy?? Or give up and lose EVERYTHING.Last edited: Mar 12, 2013

Yes I have a family. For this reason, I protect my CDL as I know it's the bread maker. My point is that this investigation is ongoing, and it seems like the OP is trying to run away from it. Plus, I'm tired of reading question after question of "I have a DUI, blah, blah and can I still drive?" The short answer is no, you cannot. You can pretty much bet that a accident like this will be the end of any driving career if charges are filed against the OP. Sorry, but this isn't a industry of 2nd chances.
I'm not saying the OP shouldn't support his family. Just saying he can no longer do it driving a truck. That is something that needs to be on our minds at all times. One slip-up that leads to a fatality and your career is done. At least for the next 5 years. Don't like the rules? Then hang up the keys. -
To sum it all up,It could happen to everyone of us!
I guess if it did we should give up on everything, let the bank take the house and the family live on the streets!
I am glad i have the resources to to hang up the keys anytime i want.....and it won't be far off with all the idiot drivers from these CDL mills who have no business behind the wheel.
This industry went down the crapper years ago and is worse every day.
The fatal wrecks are going to keep increasing due to lack of experience of the drivers and the "all about me" attitude, both truck drivers and 4 wheelers.
I had a girl pass me yesterday texting away....1/2 mile later she was spinning across the median in her Mustang.
I guess if she hit a truck and died that driver should hang it up too.........It would be his fault for driving the other direction and being in the wrong place at the wrong time.Giggles the Original Thanks this. -

Where on Earth did any of us say the OP isn't allowed to support his family? Christ, this is turning into another bickering contest.
-
So when all the "super-truckers" turn it into Jury Duty its perfectly fine, But when other truckers don't nail him to a cross and tell others not to judge its all of a sudden a bickering contest? Noone here was there that night, im sure if the police thought he was 100% at fault he would have gotten vehicular manslaughter, or criminal negligence causing death, but they didnt, hes free with his license.. And hes asking for our opinions of whether or not he could get back into trucking, he never asked whether or not you all felt he should, or if he should be sitting in jail (but Ghost Ryder you were quick to say you thought thats where he should be). He's the one who has to live with it everyday..but he also needs to work to provide.. I may not have ever caused an accident, get charged, or had any damages, but i ALSO dont think im perfect. Im just tired of all the self righteos "supertruckers" out there... If everyone was as good as they said they were, me and my 13 Heavy Tow co-workers all wouldnt have all made between $80,000-$130,000 towing their scrap off the highways. Stop judgeing people

I think it's more about the luck of the draw.
If a trucker gets in an accident in which a death is involved, more than likely the truck driver will be held responsible.
It may not be fair or right, because the truck driver may not really have been responsible - but that is how the system works right now.
And it may not get any better in the future.
We are overworked, underpaid, and considered unskilled labor.
We are the backbone of the economy, yet we are also one of the most despised groups.
We are expected to be 100% safe (whether it is our fault or not), even so.
We are expected to be on time, every time, no matter what.
Expected to spend weeks away from home, with only a few days visit time with our loved ones in between.
Expected to hold full responsibility for the loads we haul, even when we usually have no control over the loading and unloading.
Expected to freeze in cold weather and roast in hot, while our 'betters' get to run their heaters and air conditioners to their hearts content.
Expected to work 14 hours of every 24, for weeks on end.
Expected to... and the list goes on.
The pay is great, though.
I guess that makes up for the few downsides.
