Crackdown considered on illegal parking

Sycamore city officials are considering changing some regulations regarding on-street parking.
Members of the Sycamore City Council discussed the issue during their Dec. 17 meeting. The city's code currently states that a vehicle that weighs more than a ton, such as a mobile home, trailer, tractor, bus, boat or truck may not park on a road unless it is loading or unloading cargo.

Sycamore Police Chief Don Thomas said the ordinance could be revised to allow residents and visitors to obtain a permit to park a large vehicle on a road for 48 hours. Thomas said a person would only be able to obtain two permits a year.
Of course, that's not going to start at 10 o'clock at night. They're going to park over night. They're going to arrive and greet everybody, and they're going to stay two more days, Thomas said. They can get a hold of us,and we'll give them a permit. That's really not a problem for us, but we don't want someone parking an RV there for five days every week.

First Ward Alderman Alan Bauer asked about local truck drivers who regularly park their semi-trailers on a street. Thomas said the drivers of those vehicles will receive a ticket each time their semi-truck is parked on the street.
