Don't you lose your license for DUI ? and get fined...hardly seems like a slap on the wrist to a CDL holder ?

Just finished up the annual CDL holders safety, HOS, compliance meeting.

A driver from another company got caught with his cell phone to his ear. Cost him $2000, and the company $4000.

I am truly amazed. Most drivers get upset about the government sticking their nose into things, yet I hear clamoring about "there ought to be a law against..." I have no problem with some idiot using their cell phone, ala no hands free. It is a risk. If they can't multitask and then end up smashed into and overpass, well, that is nature's way of removing them from the gene pool. I know this sounds extreme and there are risks to other folks, but how far do we need to have another law or the government feeling that it must decide for us what we can or can't do safely? And a "law" does not stop anyone who is going to do something anyway. No law can stop someone from using a cell phone, texting, or even murdering someone. There is already means in place to deal with that if it is the case. It is called civil litigation. If and action you were involved in caused harm or death to another, then you can be sued blind. Why do we seem to think that the government is the one who was wronged and they get to keep the money? And how does the government getting involved, in any way, compensate a victim for the wrong of someone else? We do have a strange view on moral accountability and just compensation of the victim in this country.
