Replace what is broke. The "while you're in there" approach can cost you 20+ thousand. I have a buddy that paid over 20k for a bad head gasket. The Cat shop said the cylinder packs look good but "while were in there".....

The factory 625 MXS has lower compression, different cam, injectors, and the big turbo (top one i think) moves WAY more air the the 435 to 550 MXS's. Some people may try to tell you otherwise, that it's just tuning....but they are wrong. Pdi argued with me for the better part of two weeks before i went to my local cat shop and got a print out and brought to them.
One easy way to spot a true 625 in a peterbilt anyway is the coolant tank. Mine is back by my firewall rather than ontop of the radiator. The radiator is also much bigger than the 550.

I give Mr. Haney credit for this knowledge.

The "while Im in there method" helps me sleep better at night. Like daddy always said.....if you don't have time or money to do it right, when and how will you ever have time to do it over.....

I like that! I like the while i'm in there method aswell. If you trucking enough to wear a truck out and don't have the money to fix it when it's down.....you shouldn't be trucking, because your probably just screwing up the rates for everyone else.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but I've got 3 475 Acerts in Pete 379's all with the coolant tank on the firewall. I think they're pretty common that way.

We have 7 Pete 379's with 475 Acerts, all have the coolant tank on the firewall.

In this instance (helping a friend), I'd used the while I'm in there method and do a complete in-frame. The other 5 cylinders are about 1/2 way through their life, so a complete in-frame should give you another million plus miles. If he's planning on keeping the truck that long, spend the extra money now or spend even more later. If he's planning on getting rid of the truck in the next 500-600K miles, then I'd do 1 hole.

What part of this reply has anything to do with the original post that this thread was started for.
