I read the book "Denison's Ice Road"-reminds me a little of the pre-Dalton haul road, although we were more overland and less on ice.

I had 22 trucks running from Canada up to Fairbanks and Deadhorse if the early 70's. Took us less time than it does these so called Ice Road truckers today.Wymon Thanks this.

You gotta love TV! I haven't been up the Dalton since they built the Yukon River Bridge. I know our paths have crossed somewhere.

I can't even remember if it was called the Dalton back then-we just called it the Haul Road.

That's right. Alyeska (Bechtel Corp) Paid us a flat rate to run up to Deadhorse. Plus they paid for room and board, fuel and tire repairs for anything north of the Yukon River. If it took longer than 54 hours to make a rounder due to weather, accidents, etc., you got paid an additional $65.00 an hour. I recall drivers taking 55 or 56 etc. and brag about getting an extra hour or so. My drivers got paid 54 hours and my owner ops got 80% of gross and they could make it in 31 to 34 hours trip after trip. And all we have had for big power was 335, 350 and a few 318 and the odd Mack with a 237. Everyone of my guys could run circle around todays "Ice Road Truckers". It's beyond me how Carlisle can have such a bunch of idiots running around with their name on the doors.

Just look at the clowns Carlisle have as trainers and safety guys ...pretty much tell you why they have idiots running around with their name on the doors !

Hell yes!! Ron, Boomer and Dave Kapchinsky. Dave is the only left and live in Edmonton. I worked as a consultant to Kaps in the 80's. Kaps Transport had bought out Al Renk Trucking up in Alaska in order to get Operating Authorities. I simply applied for mine and had it granted.
