The latest rand mcnally hasn't done me wrong yet, still fails a bit when it comes down to side streets which at that point you can just zoom it out and look for yourself which roads are the best to use. I use the atlas (paper, just buy a new one every year) frequently as well. You old crusties are too set in your ways. :biggrin_25525:

One good thing the military taught was land navigation and grid reading, use that with a map or GPS it works better.

Yeah, I suppose we should shut up about buttonless cell phones that won't work in cold weather and radios with dim puny little buttons you can't see in the dark as well.

I find that it helps calculating the route by the route my company gives me, look at my atlas and then comparing that to what my GPS routes me. I make changes when I deem necessary, but I think relying solely on a GPS is a little dangerous, sometimes that thing takes you down what I call, "Death Trap" meaning small street where trucks cannot go down, down country roads and to dead ends. It happened a few times, and that is why I now use all three of my tools.

If someone has no sense of direction they could learn using the map with the GPS, it would teach the paper part after a while.

I use both. I find myself relying on my gps a little to much though.

I have to break that habit.

I don't blindly follow it where it will put me on a bad road or in a tight spot.

I just don't spend enough time mapping out my major routes sometimes.
