    Hello everyone.

I have 10 misdemeanor convictions on my record. (Jan-5-1999 Worthless Checks x 6) , (May-31-2002 Petit Larceny) , (June-3-2002 Domestic Battery x2) , (July-3-2002 Domestic Assault). All charges were wrapped together for one 6 month jail sentence.

I worked some jobs between 1995-2002 and than married. Since 2002 I have been out of the workforce and taking care of my children while my wife worked. I have attained a 2 year Business Degree during this time. I rejoined the workforce Sept 2012 as a Direct Support Worker for mentally disabled children which I am still doing currently.

I am set to attend a CDL training school in one week and was wondering if you veterans here know if I will be hire-able. I have a passport, and my background/fingerprints have been approved for Hazmat and TWIC oce I have a CDL#. MVR is clean and received DOT long form physical last week. (By the way, I applied at swift and they basically said "shoo go away".

I don't care much about the pay or miles, my wife makes more than enough to take care of things. I just want to get on the road and get at least 1-2 years experience.

Thank you to anyone that reads and/or comments on this thread.

I don't know much about the industry but if Swift said go away that can't be good.

Uh, yeah, no. I'm usually pretty straight forward and I will be here. Your record, even though its 10 years old, is pretty troubling. Couple that wither the fact that you've been out of the workforce for over ten years and you are really a tough sell. With your record and work history, I wouldn't even look twice at you. And real men don't hit women. Ever. I kinda hope you can't get hired. It would certainly serve you right.

I'm sorry who said it was women? You sure are something else to jump to that conclusion. The domestics were against my brother I was living with, since it seems I need to be more specific then I already was.

Hmmm. I was wrong and I apologize, but just for that. The companies probably saw it the way I did. Irregardless of the facts surrounding not one, but three charges for violent acts, you aren't an easy sell. And once again it probably serves you right. Understandably it's been 10 years, but put yourself in their shoes. Would you hire you after looking at thousands of applicants who don't have a record like yours? That should be a pretty easy answer.

One good thing is that at least 10 years have gone by since your last conviction. From the looks of it, you have gone to great lengths to straighten out your life.

What is most likely holding you back is a lack of work history from 2002 through September 2012. Currently, you have 6 months of a verifiable work history. Trucking companies often want verifiable work histories ranging from as little as 3 years to as much as 10 years.

It is GREAT that you did care for your children while your wife was out working. Hopefully, a future trucking company will take this into consideration.

It is also GREAT that you have been approved for HazMat, TWIC, and have a passport. Many truck drivers who are currently employed as truck drivers are unable to achieve this.

    Good luck to you!

God bless you and your family! God bless the U.S.A.

If I still owned trucks, it would be your lack of experience which would have me send you elsewhere. If you had experience, I wouldn't necessarily rule you out, but you'd have to do a good job convincing me that your past is in the past and is going to stay there, and I'd expect you to have spent some decent amount of time at your last job. But I'm not an OTR carrier, and never was - I ran two trucks pulling end dumps locally. OTR carriers can be more lenient as far as experience is concerned, and less lenient insofar as work history and records go.

Well to be honest, yes I would hire me although it seems you think I shouldn't. All criminal activity stopped 11 years ago. Been married with 3 children for the same. Have a business degree. Have initiative as shown by getting everything like the passport ahead of time. Just the fact that I can get a passport and CDL should say the GOVT at least finds me trustworthy. I work with disabled children, in which required an extensive background check. Considering the above, yes I would hire me. And your immature notes about how it may serve me right are funny. You don't even know me, other than some mistakes over 10 years ago that have no bearing on who I am today.

mje hit the nail on the head.

The history of violence would normally exclude you from most mega carriers, but it is 10 years old & it hasn't prevented you from getting a hazmat endorsement. Still, if you own a $150,000 piece of equipment with $1,000,000 in cargo & the potential to injure or kill dozens of people, you'd think twice about hiring someone with a history of theft & impulse control/anger issues.

Now if you'd been working at the same job for the last two years, you'd probably have a few take a chanve on you, but with essentially no work history you're going to be a very tough sell.

Is it possible? sure. But expect to hear 20 no's before a 'yes' -- and expect that yes to come from a company that takes advantage of drivers with few options...

If you can get a FAST card for Canada, your chances of finding good employment would improve. But the criminal history may exclude you (may only be felonies that exclude -- not sure).

Also -- big question: Is there ANYthing on your driving record?
