    Hey everyone,

I recently attended a job fair at my local Sage school just to see what companies had to say and to look inside of the trucks. I talked to a rep from one of these moving companies, I think it was Johnson. Sorry, I can't remember which one it was. I was just wondering what was the consensus about these kinds of companies where the driver shows up to the location and there are laborers there to help with the loading and unloading. The pay seemed really good but I just got a bad vibe from this guy, kind of like a used car salesman. He broke it all down where the drivers pay for their own fuel, had to pay for any damages that might occur during the move, etc.

Personally, I would steer clear away from this "moving" company. Something both sounds and smells very "fishy".

If you're interested in this company, check the yellow pages and online to find out if they are an agent for a major moving company. Sounds like some kind of truck/trailer lease deal.

    channelingmyself and mje Thank this.

UNLESS that person has exhausted all other attempts to gain employment.......

I would personally steer clear of any moving company! Unless you really like the physical aspect of it. There are too many other good driving gigs out there to be bed buggin!

There are many other different avenues of trucking, have you looked into some of the other ones?

Just to name a few: dryvan, reefer, flatbed, heavy haul, tanker, container, doubles, triples etc...

mje, Tonythetruckerdude and superpet39 Thank this.

I've also looked into those as well, I just wanted to get the scoop on these moving companies since the starting pay (according to the recruiter) was averaging around 57k a year. It just appeared to have some other aspect to it that he wasn't disclosing. Thanks for your input.

    mje Thanks this.

The moving company is required to have damage insurance . It is by the pound and way too low but the driver won't be liable with a reputable company .

Not true with household moving. Depending on your agreement with either the agency or the van line, the driver can be held repsonsible for claims for damages. Sometimes there is a deductable limit the driver has to pay the 1st part of. Sometimes the driver's pay and the kinds of loads they will offer will depend on claims history/record. So a driver may pay something out of pocket just to keep it off his official record.
