dannythetrucker- Yes at $1.50 after paying driver it would be okay. I account about $0.15 per mile (all miles) for maintenance escrow. I have freightliners and Volvos 2005-2007.

I'm thinking maybe tanks, dedicated haxmat or specialty chemicals type work might pay that........:biggrin_2556: don't think any FAK companies will except for specialixed stuff.

Agree that best bet is probably direct for a manufacturer of some type.

You won't do $2 a mile all miles in with a big expedite company like Panther. Be lucky if the truck does a true average of $1.75 a mile.... lucky... As far as solo operation in expedite goes you really don't need many miles to make a decent living. You might do better than $2 a mile all miles in at a company like FXCC or LS but you are not just going to lease the trucks on at either, kick back, and watch the rates come to you... If that's what you're thinking you'll be lucky to clear $1.50 a mile and struggle. Like everyone says nobody pays rates like that when there are so many thousands out there lining up and signing up for $1.50 or less a miles day after day, no-one has to offer pay like that.. You're gonna have to work and think out the box if you want to avg better than $2 a mile..

Fedex custom is not a good place to be.I lasted 3 weeks with them.Yes they do have good paying freight but you are mostly waiting. In orientation you will pay for your drug test, qualcom install, decals, and they will tell you that you cant stay in their yard but have to drive to truckstop after a day in orientation.they have limited freight and dispatchers who have never been in a truck so when you tell them that the load is to heavy on the drives and they say whats the problem you know your in a bad place

ladywrongway- what you're describing is common place everywhere you lease onto (fees and personnel issues with staff), but you said it clearly they do have good paying freight. Who are you running with now?

Not bashing or anything like that but a driver is responsible for load placement and how it goes on, does FEDEX dictate how it goes on?

Just asking since I have no clue about them or how things operate, thanks.

aiwiron- freight is no touch to the driver. Driver may be responsible for securing a load. Nothing out of the norm in terms of load placement mostly light freight. We haul a lot of freight that is usually meant for a straight truck which is light freight.

    aiwiron Thanks this.

Thanks for responding, I haul alot of light 53ft van loads and even if we are no touch I still stand on the dock as they load to keep problems low. One shipper refused to allow me on the dock and the confirmation said driver count, called our broker and they got the issue smoothed out since it was high value and negotiable freight.

I learned over the years never to trust a loader or unloaded crew.

JB Hunt advertises $150,000 a year for O/O. If that is pulling containers it may or may not be short miles. JB has O/O pulling containers from the Chicago rail yards to Wisconsin. It might be worth looking into. They take care of their equipment. In 3 1/2 years I only pulled 2 chassis that offtracked. Biggest problem is missing lights. If you are thinking off pulling containers buy a truck with a dump valve. Again, for all you wanna b's that only see $$$$ your income will be (rule of thumb) 1/3 of your gross. $150,000 gross is 1/3 to taxes, 1/3 to truck (fuel, repairs) 1/3 to the O/O. If the cost to operate the truck exceeds 1/3 of the gross, take a guess where the extra money comes from. A company driver pulling for a decent outfit will make $50,000 a year, have better benefits at lower cost and not have the headaches of dealing with truck repairs. Break down on the road and there is no guarantee that the mechanic that shows up will know what he is doing.

rollincoal- hate to disagree with you but you can make $2 all miles with Panther or FedEx expedite.
