and surprisingly, automatic trannies in trucks have this same ability to hold a specific gear, but hey, you keep listening to those who've never driven one, and you'll do just fine

you do realize that is there to protect you, sasquatch, from destroying the transmission. My '09 autoshift does the same, you cannot start in any gear higher than 3rd, which I don't know why you would (based on your comments, I wonder if your one of those who try to start off loaded @ 80,000 in 3rd). Now, as for manual shifting, @ 80K, I can start in 1st and manually double upshift through 7th without a problem (although the rpms are a bit low by the time you hit 7th if I do it too fast), have tried to do it through 10th and it will, but the rpms don't keep up. Perhaps, your company has specific setting made on the trans (they can do this) so that you don't abuse it. As for downshifting, yes, mine will not manually downshift if the rpms are above 1350 (never been a problem), and will automatically downshift somewhere between 1050 and 1250. Oh, and I've been driving autoshifts for 13 yrs and 1.3 million miles, so come back and talk to me about it in 10 yrs.LaBubba, Hammer166, peterd and 1 other person Thank this.

sudden steep inclines? what your driving down a flat road and suddenly a 10% grade magically appears in front you without warning?LaBubba, WitchingHour and peterd Thank this.

LOL..Where do you guys come up with this stuff? My average loaded weight is 78k lbs. I drive Oregon to Socal and back pulling Canyon Creek, Smith, Sexton, Siskiyou and the Grapevine passes every single week. My Volvo iShift auto has never stalled on me once in either auto or manual setting.

I had something similar to that happen to me when I was in South Africa. Except that sudden grade was a sinkhole which literally opened up under me.RogueX Thanks this.

What is with the hostility?! What exactly is your problem with what I said and why are you being rude?! I was just simply stating facts about how the thing operates. Of course I realize that the settings are that way to protect the tranny...why else? If you had actually bothered to read everything I said you would have noticed that the only issue I dislike is the fact one cannot start in a higher gear, like 4th, when BOBTAILING! Nothing wrong with that! These Volvos have gauges to measure the amount of pressure on the 5th wheel, one would think a sensor could sense when bobtailing and allow for 4th gear starts. Instead of just being a jerk for jerk's sake, tell me one thing in that post which is incorrect...F U and the horse you rode in on!

Example, leaving the 3M roofing granule plant in little rock, after loading my hopper bottom right up to 79,900 you turn right out of the plant and there is no time to get up speed. So, yes the grade is right there! Another time it happened in Alabama, again, fully loaded of course, very curvy old country road leads to a hairpin turn and massive sudden incline. Never had an issue in the mountains out in Arizona or California. My trans seems to have a longer than usual pause in between shifts, that's the cause I guess. Any yes, to answer both of you, I would wager the grade on each of these hills was at least 10%. Nothing I could do, it's an automatic, I was letting it do it's thing and that is what happened. I do not understand the hostility displayed by you here over someone just sharing an experience. Get over yourselves.Last edited: Mar 22, 2013

my eaton auto has manual i put it in a gear and go downhill just like everyone else
without excessive brakingLaBubba Thanks this. -
I bobtail from time to time in my 2013 Volvo with iShift. From a dead stop I click on the up shift button (in the auto setting) to whatever gear I most prefer starting in when bobtailing, which is usually 5th gear.
When I'm empty (pulling trailer) I usually click up to 3rd or 4th gear from a dead start.
Perhaps your transmission isn't set the same way?
Hopefully you're not interpreting my interaction a "hostile". I'm just trying to give some perspective based on my personal experience with iShift automatic transmission.
One thing I can assure you all of, since I was assigned this truck in January, I haven't ground or missed one single gear, even in the most difficult of shifting conditions

No, I guess you were not, but striker sure was, starting out with namecalling and just being a jerk for no reason...I will never understand people like that. I wasn't being sarcastic or mean about anything in the post he replied to. Yeah, the eatons will not let you click it up any higher than 3rd from dead stop, ever, at least mine will not. I never run empty, always have at least 10-15k of empty racks in the box so I usually start in second. I think my issue is the time it takes to shift, seems like such a long pause in between gears...even on small inclines, like leaving this particular truck stop I fuel at regularly, when I am loaded pulling out onto the road going from 2nd into 3rd the rpms drop too low and the torque just isn't there, it has never stalled out there, but sometimes it feels like it might. Some autos must have a smoother quicker shift pattern.
