Im not the type of person to whine about "thats not fair"... But... THATS NOT FAIR!

The fact that you can even consider a 9 axle (and the profit that goes along with it) with a 2001 truck, while I (living in Arizona) could not possibly make a living without a new truck every few years, that suhhhuuuucks. You can pull a 9 axle with a $30,000 truck. I have to buy a $150,000 truck if I want to go to ports, most loads are in and out of ports on the west coast with a 9 axle.

    Im hating this country.

You better read the CARB schedule again driver.

If you have 3 or less then one must be compliant in 11 months, one more must be in 23 months, then all of them in 35 months (Jan 1 2016).
*oh and that is ONLY if you ALREADY have all of your trucks registered with CARB (so you cant go buy old trucks as people sell them to get compliant). You did register with CARB didn't you? No? Then ALL of your trucks must be compliant by January 1 2014 (unless its older than a 1988 because mechanical motors cant have DPF installed, you have till 2016 with them).

You dont need a new truck to be carb compliant. For $15,000 I can convert my 379 and make the EPA happy. But for obvious reasons I'm gonna drag my tail as long as I can. I have enough experience with EGR valves, coolers and failure prone electronics to last a lifetime which is why I bought this truck. I sold my 2010 and bought a 2001 the best thing I ever did! They dont build em like they used to.

Its possible that I'm wrong but even the Caltrans officers are confused and not sure...I asked... So until they write me a ticket or give me notification I will keep running this old girl as is.

By the way I'm no longer considering pulling anything more than this 3 axle RGN with this truck. Thats why I posted this thread to understand if it was capable. It will pull it but I'm gonna tear up too much trying it.

Is it possible to get heavy on a lighter spec truck? As a previous poster noted, absolutely, you just can't get wild about it. I don't really care how heavy spec the truck is, if it has a partially double, full double, or even triple frame, or how deep the rear-end gears are, etc. if the driver doesn't drive it in a way to preserve the truck, it won't last.

Another question to consider is, where will you be running? Not just regions, but, where are you loading out of? Will you be loading in rental yards, at factories, etc. or are you expected to get out into the mud on the side of mountains?

I am gentle on my truck because if it breaks I pay for it. But I run MN to CA and all states in between. Lots of ups and downs. As you do Im sure I go where the money is. If its cheap I dont touch it. On more than one occasion I have rejected a load after it was confirmed due to bad info.

You're talking about way more truck, than I've been using. I've been using a 2+3+1 for the last two years in Montana. All i've got for a truck is a 3.55 reared 16913 transmission ISX at 475 on 40K rears. I've started the truck loaded to 160,000 on a 6-7% grade, was able to get to 3rd gear. Been over Homestake, and Macdonald passes. ONly thing I want more of is power, and an 18sp for a little lower starting gear.

I personally dont think that he would even have to think about getting a C box for pulling 9/10.
I pulled 2/3/2 over the Coquihalla all the time without.
Chris322, personally I think the truck you have is too light spec. Can it be done? For sure.
Guy I know pulls a heavy 9 axle over the coke all the time, basically a reefer spec pete 379, but fact is that hes starting to blow stuff up.

My truck was an 08 (d@mn dpf) 388, 550 ISX, 18, 46,000 full lockup rears with 4.10's inside, double frame, 16,000lb front on 425 wide steers.
Even with a 32" flattop she was tipping the scales bobtail at ~21,000lb if I recall correctly, but the only driveline failures were emission and that one time I tossed a universal from one cap not getting lube.
