FWIW, the Goblin truck in Maximum Overdrive sounded like it was powered by a DD 2 stroke. Guessing by the vintage of the truck, most likely an 8V71.

All Detroit's are actually oil cooled, and the water really only cools the heads, they are the toughest engine around and that is on the tag look at it they all state Heavy heavy look at any Cat or cummins. The very first 8V92s with the high mount turbo put out over 480HP and were rated at 430, I dynod a lot of them. The engine needs to be adjusted properly and set with care, there are tricks like installing brass cover bushings in the pivot link in the Governor.
They are a torque monster try it, put it in low gear and with the Maxie's on hit the starter it will drive away, try that with any CAT or CUMMINS. Drive them between 1200 and 1600 they last a long long time -
Look at a KTA cummins engine really do not think you could find a motor to match.

12v71 had 2 671 blowers. In Detroits literature back then, they had a 540 hp twin turbo as optional. That was more than 5 minutes ago though, so....
I could tell 2 stroke 71 Detroit stories all day; but one, I drove a 238 with small 60 injectors, (so maybe 200 hp,) for about 2 years. No air shields , no air conditioning, and always fighting the wind.
One time on I-57 or I-55, south of Chicago, could only do 30 mph in a 60 mph crosswind with an empty 45. Not good, when getting paid by the mile and trying to stay on a company schedule. Today, 400 hp is a little guy.
Fond memories dispite no torque. The old girl always got me home; well except the one time 20 miles away from the barn, she threw the harmonic balancer, and by the time I got it pulled over, had destroyed the block.
One hasn't trucked, unless they drove one of the 2-strokes. Oh ya, I got a senior's truck for 2 weeks after the balancer went on break, and though I had a race car. lolspyder7723 Thanks this. -
Aah yes! Love my 2 strokes, spent 20 yrs in military rebuilding them along with cummins engines. 8" straight pipes out of a buzzin dozen at about 2200 rpm is sweet music!!

This O'l truck of mine has a 8V-92TA with a 12513 trans, double frame, 44,000 lbs rears and was the largest of the wreckers in this area back in the 70's. It of course was replaced with a newer truck. Originally this truck had a 8V-71 in it, but was replaced with the current engine by the original owner who I have known my whole life, he had it rebuilt and setup at 430hp which was ample power for his needs. Unfortuanately it is not the "silver" version which was a lot better engine in some ways, but it is still a good engine, and I have to agree,....those who kick the ground and cuss at these engines, well, I'm sure most of them never knew how to drive one, or they were the typical well, it started let's go!!! And most people forget that you don't have to be fast to do the job, you just need to be good. You gotta check the oil in everything, it's part of good maintenance,..... in everything including 2 strokes.
Theres only 1 you, so be careful out there.

Why mess around?
I ran a 6-71, 8V-71, 8V-92 and dabbled with a 12V-71 just once.
Screamin' meanies. We used to say it was GM's conversion from fuel to noise.Last edited by a moderator: May 9, 2015

So here is my 85 Autocar Construcktor 2 (no that is not a typo, Autocar's play on words).
From my understanding its half White & half Autocar.
Anyway this a 2 Stroke Detroit Thread, I bought thus truck with the understanding that the owner believed there
is an engine problem, either blower seals are leaking or it needs a rebuild, because it burns to much to be able to register in Colorado ,,!!!..?? Anyway this judgement had be made following 40 mile drive home from Ritchie Bros auction 4 years ago, since that time it has just sat. I buy the truck for $2500 and guess what 4 years later with old diesel in the tank, check the coolant & oil, rig up 2 old car batteries & squirt of ether, it fires right up with no blue smoke, just a puff of grey when you blip the throttle. So what a deal, no rust, clutch and brakes seem fine, cab needs
a dam good clean, I noticed it has new foot valve & alternator, but it does need a power steering pump, so ready to go back in 2 weeks time change the P/S pump, oil, filters, coolant, rig up some tail lights & mud flaps and get rready for its 700 odd mile drive home to Bozeman MT.
By the way it's 83 silver 8V92tta 445bhp, 15 sp RTLO14615, Hendrickson RS 58k rear. See my Autocar thread for more up coming details rebuild / restoration storyAttached Files:
