NUMBER 1 MOST USEFULL ADVISE. KEEP YOUR HANDS AWAY FROM THE HOOK when attaching your dolly. In the first 2 months i was there 3 people broke there hand while coupling to the dolly.

Haha nope, but I haven't had to back them up much yet. When I did, it was the epitome of "gong show"... I'm still very new to heavy haul, and it's not easy, but friggen awesome! :)

cant back up doubles lol. I did it once in the yard and i was able to do 10 feet of a straight line. We were having a contest for fun... Like I posted before I can hook the dolley to the front trailer and able to back it into the kite. Its a little harder but less work, only do it if the weather is raining or snowing outside.

We dont have much heavy haul around here. I live by a the freight terminals. Must be pretty cool hauling your job, ive been doing freight for two years lol

Hey I didn't say I can't back them up. Just not well. Or for any significant distance... Backing up a jeep, dolly, and booster is a whole different story. That will definitely take some time getting used to. I absolutely love my job. The fact that I was hired without any heavy haul experience, and was pretty much thrown me to the wolves is awesome. I learn best that way, but it sure is stressful!

Didn't mean to sound like I did. We cannot back up our doubles that we have. It sucks having to break it down if need be. Luckily I have never had that problem.

thats cool they gave you the chance! I know that feeling, I've had two jobs that I was hired without experience

Not allowed to back up doubles eh? Makes sense, I guess. After I quit OTR LTL, I did machinery hauling for a few months, and when they hired me, I didn't even know how to operate a forklift, let alone operate and haul excavators, man lifts, and other fun toys around. I have also been very fortunate to have people take a chance with me. Us young guns gotta start somewhere too :)

I deffinetly would not mind trying to get into heavy haul. I understand the pay can just as rewarding as pulling the intresting loads. Most companies where I live want experience only. Can't really afford to start at crap company and go from there. Oh well............:biggrin_2557:

@verticallychallenged I never spent a day OTR, been doing local LTL for two years now. I tried getting into the low-boy/construction business but over here its just so slow, My dads friend tried getting me into where he is, he told the owner he would take the time to train me and take responsibility, the owner was cool about it but has no work, they slowed down a bit. after i got laid off from my old terminal doing p/d i transferred the the bigger one for line-haul. I would still like to get into heavy haul one day but at the same time I got a great gig going on now and dont plan on messing it up. I hear you where you says us young guns need to start somewhere, Im 24 and the youngest at my terminal doing the road. Everyone else is a lot older

@drozzer69 I have the same problem, everyone wants exp. Theres a company close by that actually hauls the double 48's by me. I asked a guy who works for them and he says its 40cpm wit a van, and if you choose to do the doubles its 48cpm... and in most areas you have to break them down and drive a single then go pick up the other. Only 8 more cents a mile doesnt even seem worth it. I am now making 54cpm pulling a van or bob-tail, and 55cpm when i get doubles, so im happy where I am... Dont know why they pay you a penny less for a van, we dont have the choice what we want but its whatever, as long as I make money and pay the bills I dont care
