I'm now in the unusual position of being able to answer my own question. I'll include it here for the benefit of others.
I called my former employer and explained that I was interested in coming back to work there again. I
explained that I attended another company's orientation. The personnel department employee I spoke
with told me that if I went as far as taking that new company's drug test during orientation, I would have
to go through orientation again at the old company before being re-hired. Apparently the line at which you
are considered "hired" by a new company is the drug test.

Muff, here is a definition of a DAC Report. Hope it helps.

The DAC employment report is a detailed summary of a trucker's work history in the trucking industry.
Most trucking companies today participate in sharing this information about truckers. The DAC employment
report contains items such as number of accidents, reasons for quitting or why they were fired, if they are eligible
for re-hire, type of driving, commodities hauled, types of trailers pulled and MUCH more. They can also verify
social security numbers, driver's license numbers, criminal reports, worker's compensation reports, and much more.

Orientation is basically a "get to know each other" thing, right ? As many guys bail as many guys get sent home.

I know this is true as it happened to me when I left TMC. It's on my DAC as left during orientation.

it didn't hurt anything. They still call or email me about once a month.

Yes but because it "happened to you" does not necessarily give someone license to make a blanket statement that "it happens to all" when in fact it does not.

Never said it does. I was giving you the example you asked for. Just so the OP's aware it does happen. Not a big deal either way.

If the company uses DAC, a orientation bail will get noted as a voluntary quit without notice, and you'll likely have a DNR tagged also meaning Do Not Rehire.
